Photo Walk Description

Tour industrial and waterfront Queens in Hunters Point and Long Island City.
This walk will start at Queensbridge Park, then pass by Silvercup Studios and its very photogenic sign. The walk will pass modern hotels, old light industry, empty lots, and many beautiful views of Manhattan. After crossing over the Long Island Railroad and under the Long Island Expressway, we will join Borden Avenue right at its bridge over Newtown Creek and follow it back towards the East River, with the Empire State Building dead ahead. We will conclude at Gantry Plaza State Park, which features the old Pepsi-Cola sign and has its own views of Manhattan. The gathering place for dining will be added shortly.

  • The Walk Goes Forward TODAY SATURDAY

We are walking TODAY. It is sunny right now and should stay that way until at least 2-3 pm or even later depending on the service so we are walking today. It’s up to you whether to carry an umbrella or rain coverings for your gear.
But the walk goes forward today.

  • WEATHER AND OTHER NEWS

Please check your email. Yesterday (Thursday) I sent out a big info-packed email. Among other things, it discusses the possibility OF rain on Saturday and whether we should move the walk to the same time Sunday if current weather predictions don’t change. I will continue to monitor the situation and will announce whether we are going forward as scheduled or delaying to Sunday (1) here on this page, (2) via email, and (3) on my Google Plus stream http://grbo.ws/gplus. The decision will be made by 8:00 to 8:30am Saturday morning. If you need to know before then because you have to leave early, let me know.

I am putting this on this page both as a comment and an announcement because I’m not sure which gets more attention.

  • Flickr Group For Photowalk

I’ve created a Flickr Group for everyone to share images from the walk. You can find the group here. For those who do not know, Flickr is a photo sharing site that is free to join, and one of its best features is the ability to create and join groups to share images based on events, locations, cameras, photo styles, etc.
The group for this event is a closed group, so you have have to request permission to join, and I will approve anyone registered for this walk. If your Flickr name does not match your real name that you used to register here, please include your real name as a note with your group membership request so I know who you are.
If you are not already a Flickr member, you will have to join Flickr first (as previously mentioned, a basic membership is FREE), before joining the group. The home page is at http://www.flickr.com/

  • Meeting Point Details and Subway Information

We will be meeting at Queensbridge Park, which is between the East River and Vernon Boulevard, just north of the Queensboro Bridge, and is also between Queens Plaza South and 40th Avenue. We will meet at the south end of the park in front of a red brick building that looks like this and sits almost underneath the bridge. The park is not enormous and you should have no trouble finding us.
The closest subway stop is Queensbridge-21st Street on the F line, which puts you on 41st Avenue about 3 blocks from the park. You can also use the Queensboro Plaza stop on the 7, N or Q lines, or the Queens Plaza stop on the E, M and R lines. Please note that if you use either of the Queens Plaza stops, that Queens Plaza North does NOT run all the way to Veenon Boulevard and the park. I suggest you use Queens Plaza South, and cross under the bridge at Vernon Boulevard.

Important Note: I have not confirmed whether any of these lines skip these stops on Saturdays. Barring a significant service disruption, each stop should be served by at least one Subway line that day. I suggest everyone consult a subway map and an online map service such as Google for specifics.

  • Gallery of Walk Location Images

If you are wondering what types of views are available on the walk, I have put up a gallery of images I have taken from walk locations over the past 2 years at this link.

I’m joining your walk because you took the time to post images, and I really liked some of them.
Please give specifics as to where we will be meeting, and how to get there.
    Thanks,
    Ruth

    • Mark Garbowski says:

I’m glad you found the images useful. I added more information about the meeting point. Please let me know if you need any more information.

  2. Lynn Ronan says:

Thanks for the images. Now I know what lens to bring! I used to work in LIC and have been meaning to get back there. Looking forward to it. Thanks.

  3. Danielle says:

I hope this isn’t something that fills up because I tried to create an account and join from my iPhone, and it’s not working, not even with SkyFire. Hopefully it will still be available when I get home to my computer… Does anyone know if there is a mobile site for this? Hopefully I’ll see you all in October!

    • Mark Garbowski says:

Hi Danielle. It appears that you managed to sign up so I’m glad that worked out.

      • Danielle says:

I posted a comment this morning about Saturday vs. Sunday and also a reply here and neither showed up. Are the comments moderated? (If they are and they haven’t been approved yet, no need to approve this one…)

      • Danielle says:

Well that answers that, and I can’t delete my previous reply. My original reply was “Yes, I did manage to signe up and bring a family member too!” Plus, I’m now being told I am posting comments too quickly so I at LEAST got an error message. I wonder how long I need to wait…

  4. Pat McGovern says:

I just signed up. The site won’t let me sign up for my husband, Henry. Right now we are sharing the same email account. How can he sign up?

    Pat

    • Mark Garbowski says:

Pat, if the registration system requires that each user have a different email address (which is very common), then I think the best solution is for you and your husband to get a second email address from one of the free services, such as gmail, yahoo or hotmail. In fact, i do not know of nay other solution that will work short of an additional email address.

  5. Gloria Roldan says:

Thank you for giving us a glimps of the area through your lens.

  6. Gloria Roldan says:

Hello Mark, I have not mastered North, South, East and West. Could you please give me more Specific directions? I hope to be able to take the F train. What are some of the land marks to look out for. Much appreciated.

    • Mark Garbowski says:

      Hi Gloria,
I haven’t actually walked that particular segment myself, as I get to the meeting spot a different way, but according to Google Maps and the street view, I think you can do the following. When you exit the subway, locate the Queensboro Bridge. If you can’t see it get to the nearest intersection and find it. Then orient yourself so the bridge is to your left and walk parallel with the bridge. You will be heading towards the park. Note that this won’t necessarily work from other subway exits, just the 21st STreet Queensbridge F line subway stop. Looking forward to seeing you next week.

  8. Jennifer Aguilar says:

Hope the weather holds out for tomorrow as I can not attend on Sunday! :crossing fingers:

  9. Juan Rojas says:

Praying the weather gets better. Can’t make it on Sunday.

  10. Mark Garbowski says:

Still waiting until tomorrow morning to decide, but if things stay the same we are going forward tomorrow. The prediction I’m looking at says rain will be spotty from noon to 3.

  11. Danielle says:

Short version: I am ok with a rain date of Sunday if it is pouring but will tolerate light rain on Saturday if needed.

    Long version:

I didn’t post anything about the rain date because I thought it was like a rain date for baseball where if it’s raining a little they still play, but they decide at the last second that the game gets rained out if it’s pouring. The next email made it sound like you were going to make the decision today. I REALLY like the idea of deciding on Saturday morning.

I have a strong preference for overcast skies in the middle of the day and against pouring rain. I have a tolerance for light rain. I am probably available on Sunday (95% sure).

    Let me explain:
Mid-day light is harsh when it’s sunny and you tend to lose details in your whites and blacks. During this time of day, overcast skies give a softer light making exposure easier and more details in the photo. Also, when it is overcast, you don’t have to worry about getting your own shadow in the picture. Fog makes for great pictures and little droplets of water on leaves make them look a whole lot more interesting.

Pouring rain – that one doesn’t need much explanation. It’s not good for cameras and it just plain sucks.

This morning, the forecast I looked at basically said that the weather is supposed to gradually improve from what it is at 8:00am Saturday morning through Sunday and into the week with the rain and clouds going away over time. Now, the same site says it is supposed to get cloudier as the day goes on for Sunday. The original forecast for Sunday was perfect – more cloudy when it would be more beneficial and less cloudy later on. Now I’m more convinced than ever that they don’t really know what’s going to happen this weekend and looking at the forecast and then stepping outside on Saturday morning to see what it looks like makes perfect sense.

On another topic, I think there is something wrong with this website. It let me post 2 comments 9 minutes apart and not a 3rd almost an hour later because “I am posting too quickly” (and someone posted a comment while I was writing this). But hey it’s better than nothing.

  12. Pat Mc says:

We didn’t receive any email updates beyond your original responses. Will check this site before we leave from LI Saturday. Please post any changes early as possible.
    Thanks.

  14. Mark Garbowski says:

OK. The walk is over and we just about beat the rain. I hope everyone had a good time. I know the group ended up very dispersed and I apologize to those I did not get a chance to spend much time with. I did try to greet everyone who made it to Gantry Plaza Park within a reasonable time — then it started to pour any everyone ran for cover with little chance to organize a meal. Nevertheless, everyone I did see at the end of the walk indicated they enjoyed it and I hope you did too.
So, with all of that aside – there are two more things to do.
One, go to the http://worldwidephotowalk.com/ web page, sign in, and find the instructions to upload your best image to the contest. This has to be done by noon Eastern time on October 7 to be eligible.
Second, go to http://www.flickr.com/groups/skphoto2011-queensny/ and start sharing your images with the group. I will approve memberships in the group as fast as I can. Flickr is free and simple, and if you have a Yahoo ID, it’s even easier as they are connected. Check out the images that your fellow walkers put up and leave comments on each other’s photos. I look forward to seeing what you all did. Thanks again for coming out. Unless something unexpected comes up, this will be my last announcement to the group.

    • Danielle Caro says:

For those who are impatient like me, I found this on the site:

Walkers can upload images starting October 3rd at 9am EDT

I guess that gives me time to play with my images more… Some of what I’ve seen on flickr ALREADY blows away anything I have. What a great group to walk with and every single picture on there is awesome!

      Danielle
