Photo Walk Description

Our photo walk starts out with a brief stroll along the newly opened waterfront space in Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1. Pier 1 adds 6 new acres of park including 1,300 feet of promenade along the East River, and 2.5 acres of lawn with sweeping views of the New York harbor, the Manhattan skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge. A dramatic granite prospect made from the stone salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge cascades from the two lawns to the 30’ wide waterfront promenade and serves as a tiered viewing deck will be our meeting location. From there we begin our walk north to Empire/Ferry Point Park, passing the Civil War-era Tobacco Factory, and end up just under the Manhattan Bridge on the Riverview Lawn.

Leading your adventure is Tom Dowling, a professional photographer and veteran photo walker. Tom’s promise: regardless of your skills, point-and-shooters to working photographers will all benefit from the experience.

Tips will be added as we begin the registering participants and will continue up to our walk day.

Please join us for a great photographic experience!

  • What to bring

    - Yourself
    - A friendly attitude (remember – it’s a social event)
    - Your Camera (doesn’t matter if it’s a disposable, point and shoot, a dSLR or SLR, or even a camera phone)
    - If dSLR or SLR, bring a lens or two and a circular polarizing filter
    - Tripod (if so inclined)
    - Wear comfortable clothing and good walking footwear.
    - Water bottle (fill with water of course)
    - Hat
    - Sunglasses
    - Sunscreen
    - Money for food and/or drink at the end of our photo walk.

Remember this is a walk, whatever you bring with you, you have to carry around – leave the super big lens at home.

  • Join our Flickr Group

I set up a Flickr Group “WWPW2011 Brooklyn” so we can share our photos with one another. You need an invite to join, so please email me at tdowling@lenscapture.com so I can send you one. If you don’t already have a flickr account, you can sign-up for free.

Once you join the group, you’ll be able to share 3 photos a day.

    Your walk leader,
    Tom

  • Getting There

    Getting There

The closest cross streets to the Pier 1 park entrance are Furman Street and Doughty Street ( 40.702515,-73.995017 ) in Brooklyn 11201. There is some construction going on between the Fulton Ferry Landing and Pier 1.

Bus B25 stop would be Old Fulton St – Water St (2 block walk) View Map

Subway A or C trains to High Street – Brooklyn Bridge (1/2 mile – 10 minute walk) View Map

    Driving

From South Brooklyn take the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (I-278 E toward Manhattan – Queens) to Exit 28A Cadman Plaza West

From Manhattan take the Brooklyn Bridge and take the first exit on your right (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) merging onto Cadman Plaza and stay left towards Old Fulton Street.

From the Bronx, Queens or North Brooklyn take the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (I-278 E toward Manhattan – Queens) to Exit 28 Cadman Plaza West toward the Brooklyn Bridge

    Parking

NYC Parking Regulations can get complicated, so be sure to check the signs in the immediate area. If you intend on street parking, get there very early and, I’ll say it again, read the signs. I plan on parking at the Park Kwik indoor parking garage at 21 Front Street which is the closest to our walk. Cost is $22 which includes tax. It’s a small price compared to a parking ticket and possible tow fee. Check Google Maps for other parking garages in the area.

  • Need Your Consideration

Well, it’s official, our photo walk is full. We have reached capacity at 50 walkers.

We already have several individuals who are now on our waiting list hoping to participate. So, it is very important to take that into consideration when reviewing your schedule. If your plans have changed, and you do not think you can positively confirm your attendance on October 2nd, please let me know as soon as possible. In doing so, you’ll allow another person to join our walk. So please be considerate.

If you are making the walk, great – I look forward sharing in our WWPW adventure.

  • Check out my LensCapture Blog

I posted an article about the upcoming photo walk. Of special interest to our walk members is a short slideshow of captures I made recently along the route. By no means is this all you’ll see. Our route is subject rich!

    Thanks again!

  17. Tom Dowling says:

I just made my pick. Boy, it was really tough this year. I felt strongly about a few images, but in the end, the chosen shot tugged at me. Simple, but with plenty of impact. Congrats Hector.

The HDR image of the Manhattan Bridge was spectacular. It will look great as a large canvas wrap or a metal print. In the final, I would crop out the element in the lower right which, to me, is distracting.

    • Hector Salinas says:

it’s an honor …like I said on Flickr thanks for this walk I could’ve been there for many hours more , I think god help us a little bit with that spectacular day, it was perfect to take photos…hope I can do another one to share a little more

  18. Tom Dowling says:

Everyone should check their email for an unbelievable offer from Adobe. The are discounting Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 for Photo Walk participants from $299 to only $99.

If you’re serious about your digital photogrtaphy, you need to take advantage of this offer if you do not currently own Lightroom!
