Photo Walk Description

We will explore Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. This area has long been a destination for Russian immigrants. Also called “Little Odessa by the Sea” it’s rare to hear english spoken as you meander through this neighborhood’s streets. Most storefronts display signs in Russian and the Boardwalk is dotted with the types of cafes and lavish restaurants you’d expect to see in Moscow. The architecture here is comprised mostly of Art Deco styled low rise apartment buildings interspersed with enclaves of summer bungalows converted into year round homes. Visiting this area gives the impression of having crossed into a foreign country. Our goal will be to experience, and photographically capture the unique flavor of this flourishing, and continually changing community.

About Your Photo Walk Leader:

Jeff Bachner left the automobile business after 35 successful years to pursue a career as a Photojournalist. With his images showcased weekly on Reuters’ website he knew this was the path he wanted to follow. In 2006 he joined the Brooklyn Paper. His photos frequently appeared on the front page of that award winning publication and it wasn’t long before his work attracted the attention of the NY Daily News. In 2008 he was offered a contract by the Photo Editor of that prestigious daily paper.

Jeff’s work has also been published by such notable media outlets as BBC News and Associated Press, as well as in publications like Time Out NY, Cath Lab Digest, Latin Week NY, NY Press, Blood and Thunder, and Russian Parent Magazine. His list of clients include NY Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Little Bird Style, Robert Scarano Architect, September Concert, Future Leaders Institute, and Jeff is the official photographer for the NYC Arm Wrestling Association.

  • Important Photo Walk Info

Hope all of you are ready for tomorrow’s photo walk in Brighton Beach. Here are few important things you need to be aware of:

We will meet promptly at 4:00PM on Brighton Beach Ave and Coney Island Ave.

Our end of walk location is Cafe Volna located on the Boardwalk at Brighton 4th St. We’ll arrive there at around 6:00PM. The owner has been gracious enough to reserve an outdoor table for us. Hopefully, we’ll get a beautiful sunset.

    Safety—Safety—Safety—Safety

I can’t stress enough how important it is to stay safe during our walk. Keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings. Look behind you when backing up. Stay on the sidewalk. Please don’t step out into traffic. Keep your camera and your belongings on your person at all times. If you put it down there’s a chance it may be stolen, or accidentally left behind.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, and a jacket. It’s predicted to be cool out there. Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water. There are lots of peddlers around selling ice cold bottled water for $1.00 a bottle so you don’t need to carry a large bottle unless you want to.

The most important advice for tomorrow is to have fun and stay safe. And did I mention Safety is important too?

Isn’t there a concern of low light conditions, or would you consider this optimum end of day light?

    Thanks,
    Ken Eddy

Jeff, thanks for hosting the walk – had a lot of fun. If you have not already done so would you create a flickr group so that all the people that participated can upload a bunch of their photos so we can each see what everyone else captured.

    Thanks

    Howard
