Photo Walk Description

October is delightful on the Outer Banks of North Carolina! Join me for a photowalk on Roanoke Island on the gorgeous Outer Banks. We’ll be exploring the boardwalk-lined waterfront and surrounding area of historic seafaring Manteo, a wonderful mix of old and new but aesthetically-blended docks, shops, cafes, picket fences, and parks, all lining narrow old-town streets. The centerpieces are Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse – right on the docks, and a recreation of the Elizabeth II, the ship which brought the first English settlers to the New World. There are unlimited photo opportunities within just a few blocks, and there are no hills, making this a wonderful photowalk opportunity.

We will finish at a restaurant in the midst of the photowalk area, where we can share stories and laughs, and maybe a few photos.

Sneakers are the perfect footwear for the walk. Bring a bottle of water. Apply sunscreen before we depart. I find sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat to be invaluable. You may wish to apply bug repellant, but I have not found insects to be much of a problem.

I am a published, semi-pro photographer with over 30 years experience. I’ve lived on the Outer Banks for 10 years, and co-lead regularly scheduled photo workshops on the Outer Banks. I am co-coordinator of the Outer Banks region of Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association. I know the area well! I specialize in landscape and aviation photography, and have taught photography in a community college continuing education program. • Share Your Photos!

    Hi folks!

Thanks to everyone that attended the photo walk Saturday morning in Manteo. We had to get up early, but the weather and quality of light made it so worth it! We had a great time!

There are two opportunities to share our pictures from the walk.
    - Group Flickr Page
    - World Wide Photo Walk Contest

    Group Flickr Page

Pick several of your favorite photos from the walk, and share then with the group on the Manteo Photo Walk Flickr page. Be sure to put your name, and if you want, add some descriptive text in the captions ares. Then review and comment on out peers’ photos. The Flickr page is ready to go!

(Note that posting in our Flickr page does not enter you in the contest. That’s a separate step.)

    World Wide Photo Walk Contest

Select your single favorite image for the contest. Log in to our walk’s site (http://tinyurl.com/wwpw-manteo) and post there it says “Registered walkers upload & share your best photo from the walk! Log-in to start”, immediately below my picture. Deadline is Friday, October 7 Noon EDT.

From the images entered, I’ll select the winner, who will receive a copy of Scott Kelby’s new book “Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It”.

Plus, the winning image will go to the worldwide competition, where Scott will select ten finalists and a grand prize winner, all receiving huge prize packages. Check this out! http://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes

So, let’s see what you got!

Thanks again for the extra effort to come out for our early morning shoot. It was fun meeting everybody!

  • Space available, meeting afterwards, time reminder

    Hi folks, some brief updates.

We still have plenty of room for additional people on this Manteo photo walk. Urge your friends to join us! And remember that there is a second photo walk in the area, in Corolla, led by outstanding photographer Matt Gibson. Info at http://tinyurl.com/wwpw-corolla. Join me in making a full day of it!

After the Manteo walk, we’ll gather for coffee, breakfast, and tall stories at Poor Richard’s on the Manteo waterfront. It’s just steps from our starting point.

I’ll have a Flickr page available where we can upload and share our favorite photos from the walk. I’ll provide instructions on how to do so during the walk. ALSO, there is a separate optional photo contest. I’ll pick the best photo from our walk, and that person will win a copy of Scott Kelby’s newest book, “Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It”, and the photo will also be in the running for the worldwide Grand Prize!

Reminder, the walk starts at 6:15am, giving us plenty of time for some soft light shots before the 6:57am sunrise. We’ll finish up and head to breakfast at 8:30am.

Bring your tripod, selection of lenses, and a smile. We’re going to have fun!

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday!

  • Second Outer Banks Photo Walk

There is a second photo walk on the Outer Banks, also Saturday, October 1. My friend Matt Gibson, an exceptional photographer and workshop leader, is leading a walk in Corolla, preceded by a cookout at his gallery.

Because of the remoteness of the Outer Banks, we do not anticipate booking to full capacity. Therefore, Matt and I are encouraging our participants to make a full day of it and attend both walks. I hope you will join me on both my Manteo walk, and Matt’s Corolla walk.

You may find more info about Matt’s Corolla walk here: http://tinyurl.com/wwpw-corolla

(Note that the WorldWide Photo Walk site has a limitation in that an email address can only be used for a single walk. To get around this, you will need to use a second email address such as your work email address, or a new free email address from Google, Yahoo, or Hotmail.)

  • Time change, now 6:15 to 8:30am

Let’s take advantage of the chance for some rich golden light. The time for this walk is now 6:15 to 8:30am. With sunrise at 6:57, we’ll have the opportunity to use that soft light while the sun is still below the horizon, capture a majestic sunrise, then enjoy the textures defined by the sun while it’s still low in the sky.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at 6:15 Saturday morning, October 1, in Manteo!

Dan, I’ve had a lot of trouble with the website so I’m not sure if I’m actually registered or not. I’d appreciate it very much if you could just send an email to me confirming my registration: jim_bomgardner@comcast.net

    Thanks much
