Photo Walk Description

The photowalk will begin at La Plaza Park, south of Olvera Street. We will then proceed through Olvera Street and then to Union Station where we’ll board the Gold Line towards China Town. We will then walk through China Town and back to Olvera Street. I’ve done this photowalk once before and loved it (some images HERE). It’s a small area with a wide range of subjects and culture.

You can take the train to Union Station or park your car in one of the Olvera Street parking lots. Either option will cost money, so please be prepared. Speaking of preparedness, use sunscreen, wear comfortable shoes, bring water, etc.

I’ve done a lot of photowalks in the last year. From my experience, it’s best to bring the least amount of equipment possible. I typically bring a camera and one lens. By doing that, it forces me to see in a specific way. For example, if I bring a 20mm prime, I’m looking for buildings, or large things to shoot. I’m probably not going to be concerned with flowers and bugs. There’s SO much to see and shoot that this helps me filter what I look at. This is MY preference, please do what YOU want to do.

Who am I? My name is Jon Prentice, I own a growing photography business (Jon Prentice Photography) in Sierra Madre. When I’m not photowalking or working on my photo business, I live the ultra exciting life of a Unix System Administrator!

  1. I’m having trouble registering for this. None of the links seem to be working on my computer.

  2. Mari Linville says:

I think I signed up, but how do I know for sure?

  3. Alan Antiporda says:

Sounds like fun, see you then… I like Linux, but have to work with M$-Windows.

Hi, my brother and I are traveling to LA the end of the month and we’ve joined your walk on Oct. 1. I haven’t been there since the mid 60s and my memory of the area is a little fuzzy. I don’t think the Gold Line even existed then.

Are you talking of getting off at 1st street and walking over to Main, then heading back up Main to Olvera?

    April

    • April Galloway says:

Oh, I see, there’s actually a Chinatown station listed. Sorry, guess I should have
done more research first. I was looking in the wrong direction. I’m looking forward
      to visiting the area again.

Hi April, if you’re on the Gold Line, you go to Union Station. Olvera Street is right across the street where the group is meeting. Don’t get off in Chinatown.

  5. Jodie Younse says:

I tried to register for this walk. Not sure if it went through

  6. Patrice Dwyer says:

I’m coming from North OC if anyone wants to carpool.

  7. Jon Prentice says:

I’ve received a few questions on where to park. The cross street to narrow down google maps is North Spring Street and East Cesar E Chavez Avenue.

Below is a link to a map of Olvera Street and the surrounding parking lots. Please note that not all of them will be open Saturday at 8am. The Olvera Street website seems to be having a rough day. So please let me know if that link causes problems for you.

Please meet me at the park at the southern end of Olvera Street. It’s round and has a gazebo-like structure in the center.

  8. Hi Jon, I can’t find where to remove my name and leave an opening for someone else for the Photo Walk tomorrow. I waited until the last minute thinking I might be up to going, but I’m not. I was really looking forward to it. Maybe next year. I hope everyone has a wonderful time and gets lots of great shots. Mari

  9. Theresa says:

Sorry to have missed this! If any of you were taking photos with an iPhone and want to share them on Los Angeles from an iPhone I’d love it if you would submit them here: http://losangelesfromaniphone.tumblr.com/submit

  10. maria ivanka hicban says:

    Hi,
where can we submit our photos?

  11. Jon Prentice says:

Thank you to every one of you for coming out to the photo walk and for making it such a pleasant experience!

I didn’t have to rush any of you to the hospital, or intervene in any arguments, or assist in anything remotely challenging. It was awesome! I very sincerely thank you all for being cool, sensible people.

The contest deadline is October 7 (12pm EDT). You can upload as of last night at 9pm EDT. I will select my favorite between October 8 and October 10.

I really would like to encourage each of you to participate in the contest. I can absolutely appreciate being self-conscious and not participating. I’ve been there, and done that. You should be proud of your work and to not be afraid to share it.

Here’s a link to the photowalk, where I believe the uploading option will be placed. Please let me know if you have questions. Since I’m a “leader” I don’t see the exact same things you do.

If you would like to share images with the official flickr group, you can find it here (note, this is not the contest, it’s just for sharing):

Thanks again for being awesome! Good luck with the contest!
