Photo Walk Description
Welcome, my name is John Toye, I help to run the LPPG and will be your walk leader for Leicester’s participation in the Worldwide Photo Walk 2012. The walk will kick off from The Leicester Peoples Photographic Gallery (housed within the old Central Library building) in the centre of town.
We will meet inside the gallery from 11.15am for an 11.30am start. Inside you will have a chance to view the photos on show and also have a chat with your fellow walkers before we start off.
This walk will try to have something for everyone and regardless of ability or equipment, all are welcome to attend. The route will take approx 2hrs to walk with continued stops for photographs but this depends on how many people dither along the route, as we know how engrossed we can get trying to capture a scene. So for some the walk take a bit longer. You are more than welcome at any time to leave, cut short or deviate off the route….. but please let me know.
From the gallery we will head to the Town Hall and fountain then onto the Cultural Quarter, with the Curve theartre and old warehouse architecture. From there onto and through Leicester Market, possibly with a detour to the Clock Tower. Its then up through The Lanes area to the Guildhall and Cathedral.
Crossing to St Mary De Castro, where you can take in one of the oldest churches in England and also Castle Gardens, (where you can take a detour to the canal) and Ruperts Gateway. We will then be in the grounds of De Montfort University with its mixture of old and modern buildings. We will continue from the university area up through the Magazine. From the Magazine we will head up through the Milestone Lane area and its surrounding cobbled streets to Market St and onto the gallery. Once we all meet up at the gallery for a quick cuppa those who wish, can take the short walk to the Slug and Lettuce Pub on Market St for a bit of lunch and to show off some of the images taken with your fellow walkers.
Meeting other photographers and enjoying a social occasion is what this is all about and a willingness to help some who are not as knowledgeable would be appreciated…
So get ready to sling on your comfy shoes, charge your batteries, format the memory cards and have great day out… and maybe make a few friends along the way.
Car parking is available in Newarke Street car park (£3.80 all day) or in NCP Welford Rd. Both are 200m or so from the gallery.
