  • Image Submissions

Thanks, everyone, for submitting your images. I have checked out a few other PhotoWalk locations and we seem to have submitted proportionately more images than some of the other sites. That’s great!

One of the fascinating things about something like this is discovering how different people see things differently and produce different photographic interpretations of the same subjects. Each of the submitted images for our Photowalk displayed an independent and personal view, each with it’s own strenths and unique qualities.

Judging between them wasn’t easy. We had some interesting HDR’s, some people-views, some locale shots – all kinds. The winning shot gave me the sense of being there. It clearly indicates the time-of-day and place, as well as the atmosphere. Compositionally, it has depth, some motion, some anonymized people, hints of more to come on the right edge, and plenty of color. It was also cropped in a less common, nearly square format. Usually, I prefer images that have a clear subject with little clutter, but in this case, the subject is the ordered chaos of the Shouk, itself, leading the eye to roam across the image, finding various points of interest. Nicely done!

Wishing a Chag Same’ach to all of you!

    - Jake

    • Jake Livni says:

Shai, Welcome aboard! At the moment, I don’t see you on the list yet. You have to register on-line to be part of the competition. Click on “Join this Photo Walk” (green button). If you have trouble registering, try and contact me, via this site (“Contact Leader” – in blue).

  3. Aaron Chartier says:

I cant wait! Hopefully me and my mother will come shoot with you guys!

  4. leah lublin says:

I tried joining but it tells me they already have me on file (never joined a walk or heard about this before)…so don’t know if I’m registered or not. But I would like to join – might get there a bit late since work ends at 4:00

    • Jake Livni says:

      Leah,

Welcome to the Photowalk! Someone with your name has signed up in the past day or so, so it’s either you or it’s someone else with your name and email address. :-) It looks like you are registered OK now. See if you can log into this site with your chosen username and password and then you should also be able to view the list of Walkers who have already registered. If you can see all that, then you’re in. :-)

It finally worked. Please remember to remind us the morning of the walk otherwise some of us may forget.

  6. Judy Lash Balint says:

Just registered, Jake, but like several other folks, I’ll be there after work, around 4:15 or 4:30 p.m

    best
    Judy

    • Jake Livni says:

      Judy,

Welcome! Walkers are welcome to join me on the planned route or to wander around on their own at their own pace. It would be good, though, for Walkers to meet at the starting point (Kikar Zahal) when we start and then to meet at the end, at 6:30 PM, on the plaza area outside Jaffa Gate. From there, we will move on to Mamilla to sit down and have something to eat and drink (probably at the Aroma cafe, just inside Mamilla).

I will also try to have a rendezvous point somewhere inside the Old City for walkers at about 5 PM. Thus, people who want to join the group walk for only the second part of the Photowalk will be able to wander on their own for an hour or more and then join the group for the second part of the Photowalk. This should also be useful for late arrivals. I will post more details later.

  7. Rimon Rafiah says:

Just registered. Looking forward to it, as a former Jerusalemite. What kind of gear is recommended?

    • Jake Livni says:

      Rimon, welcome!

Any kind of camera will be fine. Walkers who want help in figuring out how to use some features of their camera/flash/etc will be able to get help during the Photowalk.

Our Photowalk is planned for late afternoon/sunset/and just afterwards so keep those light conditions in mind. Bring fast film (joking!).

For the early part of the walk, we will be outdoors and should have sunlight (if the weather is clear). For the latter part of the walk, we may be in the covered shuk, and it will be after sunset, so that means low light conditions.

If you feel like shlepping a tripod around, that might come in handy at the end of the walk. Perhaps it would be better to bring a small table-top tripod. I have a couple that are also clamps and I might bring them along. (These can also be used against a wall in some cases to hold the camera steady.) Of course, there is the old bean-bag trick, too, which is sometimes helpful. A flash could be useful, too, if you feel like taking flash shots.

Otherwise, just bring whatever equipment that you feel comfortable carrying around for a few hours. :-)

  8. Jake Livni says:

    Welcome, Walkers!

Things are looking good for the Photowalk in Jerusalem on Sunday. We will meet, according to plan, at Kikar Zahal at 3:30 PM. After the walk, we will meet up again in the plaza outside Jaffa Gate, at 6:30 PM. From there, we will go to Aroma Cafe just inside Mamilla Mall for a bite and a drink and to compare notes (and images!).

Those who wish to wander around on their own for part or all of the Photowalk are free to do so. Others who might prefer to follow the assigned route as part of a group are welcome. I will set up a rendezvous point and time for those who want to do part of each or who may be arriving late and wish to join us a bit later. In any event, it will be great to get together at the end of the Walk outside Jaffa Gate as we continue to the Aroma Cafe.

    The route will be:
    - Kikar Zahal, past the Mamilla Hotel into Mamilla Mall.
    - Through Mamilla Mall to Jaffa Gate.
    - Into Jaffa Gate, through the Armenian Quarter into the Jewish Quarter.
    - Out to the parking lot to overlook the Walls and Har HaZeitim.
    - Down the road slightly and back into the Jewish Quarter.
    - Down to the steps leading to the Kotel.
    * RENDEZVOUS POINT: I will try to be at the top of the steps to the Kotel, near the Golden Menora, at approximately 5:00 and until about 5:15. This is an optional point for Walkers to join the group.
    - From there, probably up to the Cardo and into the Shuk for the walk back up to

Jaffa Gate. If we find some interesting side-streets or scenes along the way, we might follow them.

The route may vary depending on conditions and preferences of the group!

Wishing you all a Shana Tova U’Metuka, a Happy, Healthy, Sweet and Successful New Year and see you on Sunday!

    - Jake

P.S. Check the website on Sunday for last minute changes, if any.

Jake, as a first-timer, I look forward to joining part of the walk. Given it is a fast day, I would like to be able to catch tefila at the Kotel at around 5:40.
