Photo Walk Description

Welcome to the 2011 Istanbul Worldwide Photo Walk! The walk is free and welcomes all levels of photographers, from amateur hobbyists to professionals, so come join us! This year’s walk will take place in Beyoglu/Taksim. We’ll start in Taksim Square and traverse our way down toward Tünel, passing many historic sites and buildings with incredible architecture, all in the midst of the hubbub of one of Istanbul’s most famous pedestrian streets!

This will be my first year leading the walk. I currently head the Photo Club of Istanbul and photography is a passion of mine. Our club offers a variety of photographic activities to international members. We trek around the city, hold exhibitions, and participate in workshops with local professional photographers.

    It’s the night before the big day! Just a few things before we head out tomorrow –

    Don’t forget to charge your batteries!

    We’re going to cover about 1.5 kilometers in two hours, so take your time! Look for inspiration in unexpected places. We are going to pass many little shops and restaurants, street vendors, churches, old buildings, modern buildings. Feel free to explore inside these areas, but please remember to be respectful (and please ask permission before shooting inside). We’re a large group, so if you’re feeling too crowded feel free to venture out on your own and meet up with the group later. We’re going to meet at Galatasaray Lisesi around 5:15pm (approximately) and back in Taksim Square at 6:00 p.m.

    Please be careful on the walk tomorrow. I tried to keep us on pedestrian streets but there are a few points where we will need to watch for traffic. Just always be aware of your surroundings (and definitely watch your step – lots of uneven pavement!).

    Most importantly, let’s have fun and take some great photos!

    I will send out another e-mail after the walk with the links to share your photos on Flickr and submit to the contest. These are the dates that you should be aware of:

    October 7 Deadline for walkers to submit photo (12pm EDT)
    October 10 Leaders select winning
    photos by 12pm EDT
    October 17 Honorable Mentions and Grand Prize winners
    October 17 People’s Choice Voting opens
    October 24 All Voting Closes 12pm EDT
