Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

****THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR MAKING THIS A GREAT EVENT!! WE HAD GREAT WEATHER AND WHAT A SPECTACULAR PLACE WE LIVE IN…
HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR PHOTOS. LOOK ABOVE THE MAP BOX AND YOU WILL SEE A YELLOW BOX WITH THE WORDS “Registered walkers upload & share your best photo from the walk!” AND A LOG IN BUTTON. YOU CAN UPLOAD YOUR PHOTOS FOR CONSIDERATION FOR SUBMISSION FROM THE GROUP TO THE MAIN COMPETITION. WE CAN ONLY SELECT 1 WHICH IS MY JOB. SO SEND MY YOUR BEST SHOTS. I ALSO SET UP A FLICKR SITE FOR EVERYONE TO USE THE LOCATION IS http://www.flickr.com/groups/mt_evans_co/. THIS IS AN OPEN PAGE SO EVERYONE CAN ACCESS IT, BUT REMEMBER EVERYONE CAN ACCESS IT SO DON’T PUT ANYTHING YOU DON’T WANT THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE (BECAUSE THAT WHO CAN LOOK AT IT)
THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING IT A GREAT TIME AND HELPING ME WITH THE WALK. LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE NEXT YEAR

We will be meeting where Highway 103 (Squaw Pass Road) and Colorado 5 (Mt Evans Road) intersect. GPS Coordinates (WGS 84 in Degrees) N39.656661 W105.596093.
General directions from Denver area are
From I-70 West Bound: Take exit 240 in Idaho Springs. Follow Highway 103 south until it meets Echo Lake. Take Highway 5 to the top of Mount Evans.
There is a parking area at the this spot just east of the ECHO LAKE LODGE. Mount Evans is a US Forest Service FEE area and it costs $10 per vehicle (max 12 people per vehicle), If you have a National Parks pass it is valid for entry so you do not need to pay the fee. We will meet in the parking area just off Highway 103 and see if we can do some carpooling to minimize the fees. Please let me know if you have a parks pass and would be willing to either take some folks in or ride with them.
What a better way to show the world what type of place Colorado is then by photographing some of our great scenic areas and at 14,000+ feet to boot. We will have a “2 fer” here drive to the top to hopefully photograph the Mountain Goats and take some great shots at 2.65 miles above sea level. Then head down to the Dos Chappell Nature Center to hike to the Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine trees. These trees are 700 to 1,600 years old, making them some of the oldest tree species in the world. Since we will get spread out we will try to gather at the Don Chappell Nature Center around noon to take a group photo and to socialize.
This is a great “Colorado” experience. Since we will be at a higher altitude you need to be prepared for any type of weather, (yes snow in July is possible) so bring a jacket, gloves and a hat you should also bring along some wet weather protection. I will check the weather fore cast the night before and email it to everyone, but still be prepared. Also since you will be over 2 miles closer to the sun be sure you protect your skin and your eyes from the sun you can get a sunburn at this altitude in 15 minutes. As there are not any facilities other than a restroom you need to bring food and water (plenty of water as the altitude will dry you our quickly). This will be a great experience so come join us on our PHOTOWALK is open to all skill levels so bring your camera and come have some fun.
Any questions please Email me.

  • BE READY FOR SOME UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER ON SUNDAY see below for recommendations

Since a cold front is moving through we could see colder temperatures on the mountain so please be prepared. I know it has been 90 but we could see temperatures cold enough to cause hypothermia so please be sure to bring a warm jacket, hat and even gloves as well as some wet weather gear as they are predicting a 40% chance of thunderstorms after noon. We will get off the mountain quickly if thunderstorms move in as you become the a very good lightning rod at higher elevations. Also we can have the opposite so be prepared for sun and be sure to have some protection for sun exposure.
Don’t forget to bring some water and snacks as there are not any facilities other than a few restrooms without water on the mountain.

On equipment be sure to bring your tripod and remote cable release, polarizing filters, extra memory cards and batteries. Don’t forget to bring a plastic garbage bag as they make great rain covers for your equipment in a pinch.
for lenses I would recommend, wide angle, telephoto and a macro lens as you want to be prepared for everything from wildlife to wildflowers.
be sure to wear good shoes if you plan to do a little hiking.
    See everyone tomorrow

  2. James Verry says:

I joined and I will leave early from Pueblo West to participate in this walk, which is my 3 rd in 2 years.I did 2 photowalks in 2009.

  3. James Verry says:

I also have an US National Park Access pass as I am disabled. So some fees may be waived. It is good for up to 4people in 1 vehicle.

  4. Steve Clemens says:

I look forward to joining you on this PhotoWalk. I participated in one of the downtown Denver walks last summer and had a great time! Now I’m ready for some high country shooting. I have a National Parks Golden Eagle pass which will help get several of us into the Mt. Evans area.

    Steve Clemens

  5. Michelle Hedstrom says:

I’m extremely amateur, and definitely haven’t done any mountain photography yet, so I’ll suck up the early time, and just do it! Looking forward to it as this will be my very first photowalk too. I do have a National Parks pass as well.

  6. Dennis Zito says:

I’m really looking forward to this Walk! I’ve been on the previous NAPP walks in Golden and Denver. This one really gets us into what Colorado is all about … ! Look forward to meeting everyone and having a spectacular time! Last Saturday on Colorado Getaways, they had a great segment on the BristleCone Pines. Another reason I joined this walk!

Thanks Bruce for setting this one up!

    Dennis

  7. Brian Brooks says:

    Hi Everyone,
I was up on Mt. Evans last weekend and can’t wait to walk with everyone! This is a walk where you can use every lens in your arsenal, from long telephotos to wides to macros. I’m really looking forward to the Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pines in the morning light. They are just awesome.

Bruce isn’t kidding about the weather, be sure and bring a variety of clothing. It was mid-80′s at Echo Lake and low-30s and windy at the summit (with the wind chill!) Let’s be ready for any and every thing!

    Brian

  8. James Verry says:

I will be bring extra sunscreen lotion, water, an inverter to charge batteries a car, spare batteries.

  9. hillary ann says:

Looking forward to it! Will already be up there for an event and have the parks pass, so no worries.

  10. Kevin Williams says:

I’m not sure we’ll be able to go up Mt. Evans road that morning. http://www.active.com/cycling/idaho-springs-co/bob-cook-memorial-mt-evans-hill-climb-2010 Can anyone confirm?

  11. James Verry says:

If we get there before 7 AM, we should be able to do our photo-walk.

I really dislike this events, races, such a waste of time and resources, especially when they charge a fee.

This maybe an unpopular point of view, but it is mine.

    • Michelle Hedstrom says:

Yes, but will we be able to get down again with little hassle with all the bikers in the area?

    • Dennis Zito says:

I’m with Michelle. It’s going to be zoo up there with all the bikers and support folks.
Could be a real mess. I would love to do this, but I don’t want to get caught up trying to dodge bikes an spectators.

      Dennis

  12. James Verry says:

I emailed the Photowalk leader and asked if another location for the Photowalk can be used.
I really wanted to go to Mount Evans, but it looks like a mess with this stupid biking event.

  13. James Verry says:

These look like good alternates that are in the same area:

    * Byers Peak Wilderness (Sulphur Ranger District)
    * Cache la Poudre Wilderness (Canyon Lakes Ranger District)
    * Comanche Peak Wilderness (Canyon Lakes Ranger District)
    * Indian Peaks Wilderness (Boulder and Sulphur Ranger Districts)
    * James Peak Wilderness (Boulder and Clear Creek Ranger Districts)
    * Mount Evans Wilderness (Clear Creek Ranger District)
    * Neota Wilderness (Canyon Lakes Ranger District)
    * Never Summer Wilderness (Sulphur Ranger District)
    * Rawah Wilderness (Canyon Lakes Ranger District)
    * Vasquez Wilderness (Sulphur Ranger District)

  14. James Verry says:

Has anybody email the photowalk leader and gotten a responses?
I emailed him at least4 times since I joined and I never received any answers.

    • Michelle Hedstrom says:

Nope, I emailed him before I joined since I had a few questions, and never heard anything back.

  15. James Verry says:

I think our leader is not longer here. We may have to select an alternate place ourselves and see if we can get a new leader if he does respond.

  16. James Verry says:

I heard from Bruce, he had computer problems.

  17. Doug Flin says:

I would like to join the photo walk.

Looks like we need to decide on doing this Sunday the 25th or pick another place.

    • Michelle Hedstrom says:

I am so disappointed as I been wanting to go to Mount Evans for about 2 years and this was the perfect opportunity.

    • Michelle Hedstrom says:

Sorry to hear James. I, as well, won’t be able to be there. I’ve managed to get a pretty bad cold, and have been exhausted every day so far. Getting up at 5am just isn’t going to work for me this round (it wouldn’t have worked any better today). I look forward to seeing everybody’s photos, and I’m bummed since I was really looking forward to this.

    Thanks Bruce,
I had a wonderful time! Nice group of participants.

  27. Dave Purcell says:

    Sam,

Congratulations!!! STUNNING image, I just love the framing of the goats in a powerpoint in the photo and nice foreground to background interest all the way. All those cool colors really give a nice consistency to the photo. I hope you get our group some notice on the national scale :)
