Photo Walk Description

Greenwich Point, a 147 acre recreational peninsula popular for swimming, fishing, boating, water sports, walking, and nature studies, is a photographer’s playground. A network of trails weave among salt grasses and wildflowers as they lead along the changing coastline. Sandy beaches, sloping hills, herrings, gulls, terns and egrets, nesting birds, mergansers, black ducks, tamarisks and Russian olives, woods, marshes, groves and gardens – it’s all here. Surrounded by water on three sides, the park includes a marina with moorings and craft of many sizes. Residents young and old come to fly kites, build sand castles, participate foot races and bike-a-thon’s, and, of course, to relax and commune with nature.

I have lived in Greenwich nearly all my adult life and have often enjoyed Greenwich Point. The only photo I ever purchased was taken there – by someone else. I am a relatively non-serious amateur photographer, as you can tell from my all-to-infrequent updates on Flickr.

Greenwich Point is normally open to town residents with a Beach Card, BUT I have arranged for a group permit. Just tell the gate attendant you are with the Photo Walk — no beach card needed. Past the gate, stay left, go as far as you can and park. We will meet at Joe’s, the food concession stand. After the shoot, we’ll gather again at Joe’s for a bite and to share out morning. I hope you will join us for a beautiful walk, fresh air, and good company.

  • Some last minute thoughts

The photowalk is almost upon us and it looks like we’re going to be blessed with a beautiful, fall day. I’m looking forward to a fun time, new friends, and some spectacular photos. Here are a few, hopefully helpful, last minute thoughts:

    1. Note that we have changed the meeting place to the concession. When you enter the park, stay to the left. It’s at the end of the parking area. Instead of driving back to town, we’ll meet there at walk’s end for a bite and to share photos (unless the group decides otherwise, which is OK with me).
    2. The gate house is expecting us, and you don’t need a beach card. Just tell them you are with the photo walk.
    3. Bring whatever equipment you want, from your phone to the most elaborate setup. Just remember that whatever you bring you’ll have to lug around. As for me, I’m planning on one camera with a versatile zoom lens.
    4. Our walk page will be open for uploads to Google+. For those of you who are more familiar with other social media, I have set up a Flicker group http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpwgreenwich2012/
as well as a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/WorldWidePhotoWalkGreenwich
    5. I’m both looking forward to and dreading having to pick the “best” from among what I anticipate will be a bumper crop of excellent photos. So, what will I be looking for? Something, I expect, that captures the essence of our experience at this place. If that sounds vague, you’re right. Everyone’s experience will be unique, and I hope your photos capture it.
    6. The leaders have a separate competition so you don’t have to worry I’ll pick my own photo.
    7. By the way, photoshopping your work is perfectly OK. Just don’t overdo it, please.
    8. I’ll have my cell phone with me. You can email me at lsterne@gmail.com
    See you Saturday!

  • New Meeting & After-Shoot Location

Hi fellow photowalkers. I think it will be easier if we park and meet at Joe’s, the concession area at Greenwich Point. When you enter, stay to the left and proceed as far as you can go, then park. You should be there. I’ve posted directions here

  • Walk permit received!

We have received a permit from the Town of Greenwich for the photo walk at Greenwich Point. This essentially means that participants WON’T need a Greenwich beach card. Just tell the guard at the gate that you are with the Photo Walk.
