Photo Walk Description

Welcome Photographers! Whether you are a professional photographer, or you just take pictures with your cellphone and tweet them, this is a great way to take pics, make friends and maybe even learn some photo tips or win a prize! The event is free, easy, and fun.

THE WALK
This is the first year the Photowalk has been sponsored in Fayetteville and the route will take us through some of the best photo hot spots in town. We will start at the NC Veterans Park located next to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum. From there we will wind our way through the downtown streets and parks of Fayetteville, past the Market House and up Hay Street before ending at the Huske Hardware House Restaurant and Brewery. We will arrive at Huske around 6pm where we can order drinks or food* and photograph downtown Fayetteville as the sun sets or just have fun sharing the photos we captured during the walk.

WHAT TO EXPECT / BRING
We will meet at 4pm outside the entrance to the NC Veterans Park where you’ll get a copy of the route and begin the walk. Be prepared to shoot in differing light that might be challenging at times, sunset is at 7pm so as we walk the light will begin to change. Of course the weather will determine just how challenging it will be. The route is mostly flat and we will be walking at a leisurely pace, about 1.5 miles over 2 hours, so it will not be difficult. However, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and use a good strap or bag for your camera.

THE CONTEST
Ok, I’ve pretty much convinced myself that the grand prize photo will come from Fayetteville! If you are interested in submitting photos to be considered for the contest be sure to check out the main Photowalk page for FAQs, rules and prizes. You can also look at last years winning photos so you can get a good idea of what their looking for. The grand prize is pretty awesome so who knows if one of our walkers could be the lucky winner. Either way, one photo from the Fayetteville walk will be chosen to enter into the worldwide contest for a chance to win the big prize. That lucky walker will receive a copy of Scott Kelby’s book — Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It.

INCLEMENT WEATHER
So far it looks like the 1st is going to be a nice, 80 degree day, but you know how quickly these things can change. If the weather gets bad I will post any changes to the time or date of the walk here on the website. Keep checking back here closer to the event to see if there are any changes.

PARKING
There is a parking lot located adjacent the the veterans park. If you park there it’s just a short walk back from our ending point at Huske Hardware. You could also park closer to Huske on Hay Street or in the parking lot next to the train station if you prefer to be closer to your car at the end.

ABOUT ME
I’m a graphic designer who likes to take photos as a hobby. Sometimes I take photos at work but only if the real photographers are busy! I’m always looking for excuses to practice photography and I’m really excited about taking photos in the new Veterans Park because there are so many amazing angles and options for stunning photos. Mostly I thought Fayetteville was a great place for a Photowalk and I’m glad to have the opportunity to walk around with other photographers and see different approaches to capturing what we see. I can’t wait to see what great photos you come up with.

If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on the 1st.

See you there!
Jennifer

*Please bring some spare cash/credit if you would like to have a drink or food at Huske Hardware after the walk. All eats are at the expense of each individual and are not covered in this free event.

  • And the winner is...

Hi Walkers! Well, we’ve selected a winning photo from those that entered the worldwide contest so a big congratulations goes to Richard Sowers for his great photo!! Your photo will represent the Fayetteville walk very well in the worldwide contest so we wish you good luck on the next level and hope to hear that you are the grand prize winner!

Thanks to all who participated in the contest part of the walk, all the photos were great so it was a very tough choice. We really wish we could have chosen more than one photo.

We do have one more prize to give out though — for the flickr contest we put together. Talk about a tough one to narrow down! With about 250 photos to vote on it was pretty scattered on the number of favorites that any one photo had. There were lots of photos that had one person mark it as a favorite, and several with two favorites, but overall the selection of good photos was just overwhelming!

To try and make it fair we ended up adding up the total number of favorite votes each person had for all of their photos combined. So the big winner is…Will Harris, with his great black and white street photography and colorful landscapes he pulled in the most favorite votes overall. Congratulations Will! He will be receiving a $25 gift certificate to Pierro’s Italian Restaurant.

Thanks again to everyone for coming out and sharing this day with us. We’ve really enjoyed seeing all the awesome photos on Flickr and feel free to keep posting more photos for everyone to enjoy. Hope to see you next year!

    Your walk leaders,
    Jennifer and Jessica

  • Great Photo Walk!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say thanks for coming out today! I had such a good time meeting everyone and thought the turn out was great. I’m excited to see all your photos so please post them up on the flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/groups/fayettevillewalk/

While you’re on the Flickr group be sure to check out the other walkers photos and vote on your favorites for the local contest. To vote, click on the photo on the main page to open the page for that photo, then click the favorite button above the photo. You can only vote for each photo once and you cannot vote on your own photo. You have until October 7th to post photos and vote for the local contest. On the 8th we will tally up the votes and announce the winner.

Also, if you want to enter the worldwide contest be sure to enter your best photo no later October 7.

Thanks again for coming out and making this event a success. Jennifer

  1. I love this idea! I just started a photography business in Fayetteville and would love to meet other photographers and learn from them in a fun group.

  2. Jennifer Martin says:

Mary good luck with the new business, that is very cool! See you on Saturday.

  3. Lauren Rudio says:

    Jen,
Can you see if I’m signed up? I tried to do it on my phone and had difficulties. When I tried on my computer it says that my username and e-mail address already exists. I’m confused! : )

    • Jennifer Martin says:

Lauren, I see you on the registration list so you are good.

I have problems trying to access the site on my phone too so if anyone else is having problems on their phone you may have to go to a computer. Or you can click contact walk leader at the top and let me know your having trouble. That link sends me a personal email so if you send me your info I will register you.

  4. Mary Dassau says:

I was unable to “join” the walk by clicking on the button; should I wait for the map to load? Thanks for inviting me (during the last 4th Friday)

    • Jennifer Martin says:

Mary, I don’t think you have to wait for the map to load but it may depend on the computer. If you can try and send me an email by clicking contact leader up at the top next to my photo then I will get the information I need to register you. Thanks!

Glad I found you at 4th Friday. Photographers are so easy to spot! Can’t wait to see all of us out there in mass.
