  • Hello Photographers!

Welcome to the Fairhope, Alabama contingent of the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk.

This event is designed for photographers of all experience to get together and have fun!

If you are a beginner and want a few tips while you’re on the walk, ask someone with more experience if you can join them. Here is a video from Scott Kelby detailing the basics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyb7MQLSdk4

We are going to gather at Andree’s (403 Fairhope Avenue 36532 for GPS users) for coffee, pastries and other breakfast starters, at 8:30 a.m. We’ll have a very short briefing, make a group photo and then the walk begins at 9:00. Don’t forget to tip your waitress!

Quote from Scott Kelby, on the Worldwide Photowalk Web site, “This is totally a social event, and that’s why makes it so much fun. Most of the people on my walk had never done a Photo Walk before, but everybody had so much fun, they all wanted to do one again right away. Photo Walks are infectious, because when you get that many creative people together, who all have the love of photography in common, you can’t help but have a great time.”

Another important quote regarding submitting photos for the walk competition. “Most recently, we’ve had lots of questions about model shoots during the walk. Here’s how we feel about it: you can shoot models as long as it happens on the walk route, during the official 2-hour (approx.) walk time chosen by your walk leader. Also, you can use Adobe Photoshop to your hearts content, as long as everything in your photo was taken during the official walk hours along on the walk route. You can’t go back at sunset and shoot it in better light, and so on. Also, you can’t add a better sky that you shot in that same location on some other day. Basically, whatever you submit, it has to be taken during the official walk you participated in. You can shoot panos, HDR, B&Ws, you can create collages, you can process them with Instagram on your iPhone—I don’t care—it just has to be all shot during your 2-hour walk. If you don’t agree with the rules, no sweat whatsoever—just don’t enter the competition portion of the walk.”

While a suggested route is below, everyone is encouraged to follow the path that is most interesting to them. Go your own way if you wish, just be at Windmill Market at 11:00 to join the rest of us.

Fairhope is a picturesque, small town. Downtown flower-lined streets in the business district, Fairhope Pier and surrounding parks, the Fairhope Museum, Faulkner State campus and the beautiful residential neighborhoods are all available to you.

The pier is only five blocks to the west and its downhill all the way to the bay. Remember that it is five blocks uphill on the way back! Go for it!

This event is for us as photographers to have a fun time making photographs in the company of fellow photographers. Have fun!

My route is to walk to Faulkner’s campus, turning right on Johnson Avenue, through the French quarter, to De La Mare Avenue, west to Church Street, north to Magnolia Street, where we turn east to Section Street. At Section Street we turn left, turning right on Equality Street, finishing at Windmill Market.

Meet at Windmill Market at 11:00. Once there we have Moe’s and Maryanne’s for lunch. I heartily recommend both!

We’ll have a recap after gathering together. After that go make more photographs!

  1. Hey, sound like fun. I’ll be there.

    • Hey Bill! Be sure to register before attending…. You need to register to submit your photograph to represent our walk. I’ll be looking at all the unnamed, unlabeled photographs afterwards and select one to win a prize. Look forward to walking with you!

  2. Cindy Schober says:

Thanks for leading a walk in Fairhope – beautiful town. Scott said it’s a 2 hour walk so why 8:30-11?

    • Hi Cindy,

We are going to meet at Andree’s at 8:30 for coffee and a quick briefing before the walk. I don’t want to ask folks to meet at 9:00 and begin the walk immediately. This gives a few minutes of fellowship before our walk. We end at Windmill Market for the same reasons, i.e. we can visit together, have a drink, or a bite to eat, rest rooms, etc…

I hope you are going to join us…

      Stephen

  3. Courtney Anthony says:

Hi. I am not familiar with the walk. Is it for amateurs also or just professionals?

  4. Jack Parks says:

On the list of attendees, does my name in red type mean I’m on the waiting list? –or does it mean I just signed up? Thanks. –Jack

  5. Hi Jack, I’m honest enough to say I don’t know why your name is in red…. but I can tell you that you’re on the list!

    Look forward to seeing you!

    Stephen
