Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

I’m Brian and this is my second year hosting the Durham Photowalk. Last year we went to Duke Gardens for our walk. After hearing from several folks who were on the walk last year, I’ve decided to hold our walk this year in Downtown Durham. I don’t have a route or specific area in mind, though I do have some ideas. If anyone wants to make suggestions, that would be great. Once we get a plan together, we can look at a gathering spot for lunch. Feel free to email me with suggestions or questions. Thanks and I hope to see you the day of the walk.

    Leader News & Updates

  • We will meet at the market at the intersection of Foster and Hunt

Sorry, I hadn’t thought about the fact that the farmer’s market will still be open at 10am on Saturday so to make it easier to find each other I wanted to give a more precise location. Of course, several of you know me, so those who don’t can just look for the grouping of photographers standing around together. See you Saturday. 100+ degrees likely so remember to bring water and dress appropriately.

  • Well…just like last year, the Wordpress Blog setup is a ridiculous piece of ____. While it “permits” me to update the address for our meetup, it does not actually publish the change. Most frustrating. And, though I am the Walk Leader, it seems that updates don’t get emailed to me (if any of you get this, could you please shoot me an email to bmchmura@yahoo.com so I know that the update with the change of starting address gets through). When I first created the walk I had to put in an address for the start…which, it being 2 months before the walk, I’d not really chosen so I put in a random address on Main Street to communicate that we’d be downtown…We will meet (assuming anyone gets this) at the Farmer’s Market at 501 Foster St. I will ask someone who knows downtown well to wait at 325 Main St. for those (like me) who don’t get this update. Despite having raised all this with the organizers last year…apparently no attempt has been made to make an effective website for managing the walk. Maybe if we all agree to pay Scott 54 cents a day he’ll do better for us.

  • Final Info for our Walk this coming Saturday

We ill meet at the Farmer’s Market downtown. The address is 501 Foster Street. From there, groups can split off to a number of routes. There is a great old gas station building with peeling paint; some old welding company trucks (right across the street); and there’s Central Park and a new skate park also just across the street. Groups can also head off to other downtown areas. A number of our walkers are well familiar with downtown Durham and I am hopeful they can take parts of the group with a particular interest (e.g., street art, architechture, etc.) on a walk targeted to particular interests. We will start the walk at 10am (so please try to be there by 9:45 so we can get an ontime start). We will shoot until noon and then meet up for lunch/beers at Satisfaction in Brightleaf. Address is 905 West Main Street. Looks like the temp could be 101 degrees so you should think about bringing water with you or being sure to stop in for some along your chosen route during the walk. Looking forward to seeing/meeting you on Saturday. If anyone needs to reach me, they can use Google chat (which comes up on my Droid). I am “bmcportraits@gmail.com.”

Hi all. Am thinking that this comment area might be the best way for people to share ideas for our walk. Downtown Durham offers many photographic possibilities and my thought is to have a general meetup area, a map showing various photo locations of interest, and perhaps arranging to have a few models available for those who would like to do environmental portraits. Nothing is set at this point, but wanted to get the site up for signup. Feel free to email me ideas through the contact leader link above on the page, or just leave comments here where all can see. The event is 7 weeks away so we have plenty of time to firm things up. Once we have a general plan, I’ll find a restuarant downtown to host us after the event.

Check out our photowalk images from last year – I led a photowalk starting at the American Tobacco Campus and going to Brightleaf Square. Brian, you beat me to the punch – I was going to repeat it this year! Enjoy!

  3. Andrew Holt says:

What kind of people typically show up for these? Never joined one before, I’m relatively new to the area so it sounds like fun.

  4. Heymo Vehse says:

    Andrew,

Last year we had a very diverse mix – from beginner to professional photographer.
Feel free to join the walk :-)

  5. Doug Roach says:

This site is unuseable. Where it says “Registered walkers upload and share your best photo from the walk.” Then demands a login with user name and password does NOTHING to suggest that an image may be uploaded anywhere.

When will the FlickR info be available?

A nice walk through a different part of town. Got some interesting “artsy” images made (not something I normally do…) and it would be fun to share.
It’s unfortunate that Scott Kelby has contracted with this rather incompetent provider for the web page. Such tends to discourage participation.

  6. Joe OBrien says:

You can log in and upload one photo to this site now. There isn’t a flickr group yet but Brian said the group would be called durhamphotowalk2010

Personally, I’ve also tagged my photos with “photowalk” and “durham”. Can’t wait to see ya’ll photos too!

  7. Doris says:

I’ve uploaded several images to my flickr account and have a couple more to edit and then upload. Flickr ID is drdesigns. Mine are tagged similar to Joe’s to make them easy to find.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s images!

  8. Andrew Holt says:

Wasn’t able to make it, had to deal with an issue at work.

As an aside, I just launched a new photo site with a friend of mine: http://www.capshured.com. I’d love it if you guys could upload a few of your best shots and mark the locations where you took them, so I can go back out and check out some of the places you shot. I’ve walked around downtown before, but feel like I missed a bunch of places.

    Sad I missed it!
