Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

So, here is the updated plan. We are going to meet at the parking lot just East of the McDonalds at 1000 Mack Ave around 10AM on July 24th. There is a large parking lot that we will meet in and then head to Eastern Market for the photowalk. We will play it by ear with no set schedule but I would like to end around 1PM and perhaps include a short walk across the Dequindre Cut for some additional shooting opportunities. We will then head back to the cars and those that want to join us for a late lunch can head over to Traffic Jam & Snug at 511 West Canfield St in Detroit, which is at Canfield and Second St, just south of Wayne State University. This is about 1.5 miles from the parking lot on Mack Ave and will not take long and there is an abundance of free parking at the Traffic Jam. Thanks to event coordinator extraordinaire Cherie S (thanks Cherie, you’re the best!) we have some space reserved for us from about 1:30 until we leave or they close. Each individual will be responsible for paying their own check so please plan accordingly. Early next week I will be sending a request for how many will be attending and if you will be alone or have a guest or two.

Speaking of guests, please feel free to bring a spouse, friend, sister, brother, etc. Children are welcome but I would definitely remind everyone that this is an event meant for adults and chasing after your 4 year old may not result in the best time had by you or others. So please be considerate in your guest selections and keep them to 1 or 2 at a maximum.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I am looking forward to putting a face with the name come the 24th.

Thanks, Tim

Hey everyone, I want to extend a large thank you to those that braved the high temps, very high humidity and on again/off again rain to come out and have some fun shooting with everyone. I had a great time and from what I gathered by speaking to others is that we need to do this way more often. Be on the lookout for more informal meetups to come…

I have created a flickr group for posting yesterdays images. I have left the membership open to allow others to post and comment but I will moderate the photos being posted to keep it on subject. Here is the link.

Also, there is a official Kelby flickr group as well… here is the link in case you would like to join the rest of the world.

And don’t forget that to be entered into the contest, you need to log into the main photowalk page and upload your one (1) image for judging. This is completely optional but if you want a chance at a free LR3 or CS5 book, then submit an image to the site. The deadline to submit an image is July 31st. Good luck.

See everyone soon and again, thank you once again for making it a great experience had by all.

  • Just a little pre-game for the photowalk

Hi everyone, I just thought I would give some advice on what to expect and what to bring (and what to leave at home) for the photowalk. These are just my suggestions and ‘how I roll’, so your mileage may vary and what I suggest may not fit what your goals are.

Comfort – Head to feet, you need to be comfortable. If you don’t like the sun beating down on your head all day, a nice, light hat may be in order. Sunglasses are ok, just be wary of polarized or tinted glasses; they will really mess up your interpretation of what your camera is seeing. Only you know how the heat affects you and I am betting it will be warm on the 24th, so pick a shirt and pants/shorts/skirt/skort/capris as appropriate. I like shirts with a collar to keep any camera or bag strap from irritating my neck, but that is just me. Shoes – probably the most important item as we will be on our feet for a few hours. I wouldn’t recommend flip-flops or army boots, but any comfortable shoe in between should be just fine. Oh, and don’t for get that sunscreen!

Equipment – Now some of you may want to bring your entire arsenal and some of you may only have 1 lens. I tend towards a less is more approach for street type shooting and if you are thinking of bringing the wide angle, standard zoom and a telephoto, I would most likely reconsider. That 15lb bag doesn’t seem to heavy now, but 3 hrs later it will feel like 100 lbs. I am personally brining a wide angle zoom, a 50mm and an 85mm. If I had to leave one of them out, it would be the 50 as the other two better for getting the shots I prefer. Again, if all you have is a 50mm, great, perfect lens. If all you have is an 18 to whatever kit lens, great, perfect lens. The right lens is the one you have with you. Of macros and tripods, leave them at home… people will just trip on the tripod and you will be sick of it in about 10 minutes and a macro really needs a tripod, which you left at home. I am famous for always having 3 or 4 flashes with me, but for this I would either bring 1 or none; I am bringing none, unless it is a dark, cloudy day, then a little fill may be in order. Again, it is up to you but I would err on the lighter side; your back will thank you.

Nutrition – water, water and more water. Water weighs 8lbs a gallon, so take all that weight you saved by ditching those f/2.8 zooms and replace it with water. The good news is that as the day wears on, your bag will become lighter and lighter. Bonus! Bring a snack or two, especially if you get grumpy like I do when I don’t eat. Did I mention to bring some water?

Hope this helps a little and I will update the start and end locations once I have firmed everything up.

    Thanks,
    Tim

hey, tim. i’m having trouble registering. it’s asking me to “Please enter captcha information” (that funky writing/code at the bottom of the registration form), but there’s no where for me to enter it!! if i send you all my info, can you register me? i really want to be a part of this. Thanks!

    • Timothy White says:

Hi Meghan, send me a flickr mail with your info and I will get you setup for the walk. Well, on the wait list anyway, but you should be able to make the walk as we always have cancellations due to various reasons.

Hey Tim.. Is there a way to view the list of people who are going? Someone ask me who’s going…and I cant’ remember all 50 people…..:-)

    • Timothy White says:

Marji, there sure is. If you log into the site with the username and password you registered for the walk with, next to my mug shot will be a link for viewing not only the list of walkers but also those on the wait list. See you soon.

  6. Mary Jo Boughton says:

What are the plans if there are rainstorms all day Sat.?

    • Timothy White says:

Good question Mary Jo. The Market is mostly covered and if it rains we will still have some opportunity to shoot tomorrow, albeit on a much more limited basis. The plan is to do an anti-rain dance through the night and hope mother nature holds off. Of course, a little rain makes for some great photos (it rained last year too and we were treated to a rainbow). See you tomorrow.

  7. Mary Jo Boughton says:

Tim, I checked my spam for your e-mails but could not find them. When you get the Flickr group up could you please put the link here too. Thanks! Had so much fun this year. Eastern Market and the Dequindre cut were fantastic to shoot at. Look forward to next year!

    Thank’s Tim!
