Photo Walk Description

Sunrise is at 7:28 and we’ll attempt to get set up on the South portion of the beach to get the sun as it rises over the dam. After shooting the sunrise and the gulls, we’ll go to several locations to photograph fall foliage and reflections off the water.

  • It is raining up here...

We have rain in the area and it’s cold. Since we are near water, it feels at least 10 degrees colder then the actual temperature. Dress appropriately. If you want to wait until tomorrow, I will be there then too.

  • Flickr Group Created

Post as many pictures as you want from Alum Creek taken this weekend. You will only be able to enter one image to the contest for the local walk winner, this Flickr group allows you to show as many as you like.

  • In case of rain...

The beach gates usually aren’t opened if it’s raining. Those that want to photograph in the rain meet at the Below Dam recreation area. For those that don’t want to get there gear wet, there are two options:

One, I’ll be there 7 am Sunday also. We’ll make it an either, or and both walk. You can come one day, the other or both. What can I say, I’m a pushover.

Two, I’ll accept images from Alum Creek taken this weekend. If you don’t want to get wet and you can’t make it Sunday, make your own photowalk and submit your images. I’ll repost the link to the map and put it on the page for our walk.

  • Brown Bagging it

Pretty much everyone who responded chose to brown bag it. I’ll bring some bottled water and print out some maps. It looks like the trees are starting to get some color so hopefully we’ll have some great fall shots.

See everyone starting at the beach Saturday at 7am. If you have a super secret spot for a sunrise shot, I’ll be at the Below Dam Recreation area between 8:15 and 8:30 with the water and maps. I’ll probably do some HDR shots of the dam. I’ll have a tripod so if someone wants to do an HDR shot and doesn’t want to drag around a tripod, you can borrow mine.

Finally, some have posted they’ll have family or friends with them. There’s no problem with that, just a reminder. If someone wants to be able to enter a picture into the competition for the local prize, which is a Scott Kelby book, they must be registered for the walk. You will submit your picture through the site. We’ll have a Flickr group set up so you can share more than one image. Local winner gets entered to compete against the other walk winners for the grand prizes, which are thousands of dollars of gear, accessories and software.

  • Recommendations

Alum Creek is a little too big for a traditional walk. The beach is great for sunrise, the sun rises directly across the water. You usually have gulls to photograph, feathers in the sand, boats and if it’s not too cold distance swimmers. Photos from anywhere in the park taken in the 4 hour window may be entered for the local prize.

The weather forecast as of tonight is 58 and partly sunny. That means it we might get fog, which brings some other areas into play. The Marina off Hollenback Road is a good place to set up for sunrise off the docs. The cove with the docs has some great trees for fall foliage, if it’s not too early. Also, if it’s foggy the Below Damn Recreation area has some low lying areas.

Other areas you might think about hitting: Model Airplane Field, Dog Park, Disc Golf Course, Cheshire Rd. Bridge, Mountain Bike Trails.

I’ll be starting at the beach weather permitting. After the sunrise I’ll move down to the Below Dam Recreation Area. Those that want to try to get shots elsewhere are free to venture off. Those that want to follow me, I’m going to try to get an HDR shot of the dam and go up on the dam for some shots. Then I’ll get a shelter and depending on what we decide for the picnic, get ready for those that want to meet up afterward and chimp our shots.

Remember to be considerate shooting people there to work out, fish etc. Not everyone enjoys having their photographs taken.

  • One week until walk!

One week until we meet at Alum Creek. I hope the weather is a little more photogenic! The beach may be out as a starting point. They don’t want to open the gates before sunrise as there are no lifeguards. I’ll be posting more updates this weekend, including maps of potential shooting spots. Stay tuned!

  3. Ann Miller says:

I am trying to register for this walk, but I am having difficulty. I load my account information from last year, but then nothing happens.

  4. Ann Miller says:

    Never mind…finally got registered. Thanks.

  5. Duey Varian says:

Really looking forward to it. This is only my 2nd time on a photo walk. Thanks Doug for inviting me.

  6. Stephanie Hardin says:

I will have my two daughters and possibly one more. I really enjoyed the photo walk last year and am looking forward to it again this year.

  7. Shawn Ingram says:

Looking forward to it! I was registered for the downtown Columbus walk, but nature more my thing so I switched.. Fun thing will be getting there from Lancaster before 7a! Hopefully weather will cooperate for an awesome sunrise!

    • Kimberly Walker says:

Shawn, I will be following you in the sleepy haze from the Hamilton / 33 area.
Just coming off a Bermuda cruise where we were IN tropical Storm Maria 6 of the 8 days….
Im looking forward to sunny weather to take photos!

      Kim

      • Shawn Ingram says:

I’m so jealous! Of the cruise, not the tropical storm.. Although I guess a tropical storm could provide some unique photo ops.. Glad your cruise made it through it safely..

  8. Doug Ward says:

Hi Shawn- Glad to have you abord !!! Weather so far is going to be fall-like, sunny and in the high 50′s to low 60′s. Looking forward to meeting you.

    Doug

  9. Kimberly Walker says:

After the walk, it says picnic…Do you mean picnic area, or should we pack a picnic lunch? I’m going to anyway, but thought I would ask so I can prepare to eat alone if needed LOL

Oh, and thank you for arranging this walk

    Kim

  10. Doug Ward says:

Kimberly- Dennis is looking for feedback from the participants as to weather we all want to do a pot-luck style picnic or a brown bag kind of thing. I can make whatever and bring whatever is needed. so my suggestion to you is to send Dennis a message and give your suggestion.

    Thanks- Doug

  11. Shawn Ingram says:

Got the note regarding brown bag/picnic.. I’m good with just brown bagging.. Not sure how long I’ll be able to stay after the walk. Supposed to help with an early afternoon portrait shoot at a park back towards Lancaster. If I had the rest of day free, picnic would have been awesome. Maybe next time. :)

  12. Doug Ward says:

I would be happy with either, depending on how many others intend to stay. Alot of the others attending, I recruited so I will know them already, but if “brown bagging” it is whats decided, I’m just fine with that as well,,,I just want to visit and learn with new and old friends after the shoot.

If we do picnic, I can bring whatever is needed, just keep me posted.

    Thanks- Doug

  13. Doug Ward says:

Well,,,weather forecast has changed and now were looking at a very cloudy day with a 60 percent chance of rain in the morning. Bring rain gear if you have any, you might be needing it.

  14. valerie fuller says:

Dennis, thanks for adding Sunday as an option…just in case. :)

  15. Shawn Ingram says:

With the weather, I’m not going to be able to make the trip.. I’m looking at 3 hours driving total and weatherbug showing 90% chance of rain Saturday. Is Sunday an option to where we can either do Saturday or Sunday because of the weather?

    Thanks for any info..
    Shawn

  16. Dennis Oder says:

I sent this as a message to everyone, let me know if you didn’t get it:

Thanks to everyone that braved the cold and rain and came out this morning. Anytime I meet like minded photography buffs I consider it a great shoot. For those that didn’t make it we’re going to to try it again tomorrow, same time, same beach. If it’s just not meant to be, we discussed finding some place warm to sit down and talk about doing future photowalks together. I hope most of you can make it!

  17. Ralph Bach says:

Saturday was cool and overcast, but still had a good time. Sunday was still cool, but that tremendous sunrise was worth it all. Made a lot of new friends who enjoy the same thing as me. We even talked about having our own photo walks throughout the year. Scott Kelby will be green with envy, that he didn’t think about doing something like this.
