Photo Walk Description

This is the inaugural Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk in Keweenaw County, Michigan. This year we will be walking out on Hunter’s Point to photograph the scenic beauty of this park. If time permits, we may drive up to Brockway Mountain to shoot the sunset.
We are very pleased to have Steve Brimm as the co-leader of the walk. Steve is one of Michigan’s premier outdoor photographers. He is dedicated to his craft and to the environment. Steve lives on the wind swept shores of the Keweenaw Peninsula. His award winning photography is published regularly in regional and national magazines, books, calendars and corporate collections. During and after the walk at The Mariner North, Steve will answer your questions and offer suggestions on subjects and techniques.

    Leader News & Updates

  • Tomorrow is the day.

    October 12
Tomorrow is the day. Weather looks like some rain possible, but maybe not real stormy. Mariner North is ready for us when we want to warm up by the fireplace and have a beverage. We have 35 (wow) photographers signed up. This is shaping up to be a terrific Photo Walk.

Look for signs at the turn off from M-26. Remember this is not the Marina parking lot, the Hunter’s Point lot is just to the west.

If you’re unable to attend the walk you signed up for, you can go to WorldwidePhotoWalk.com and log in, then click “Your Walk” at the top of the page. Once there, scroll down to the map on the page, and just above it you should see a button that says “Leave This Walk.” Click that button, and you’ll be un-registered for the walk.

    Submitting Your Contest Photos:

Each walker will be able to submit their best photo taken during the Photo Walk in our contest. After your walk go to the Worldwide Photo Walk website and log in, then go to your Walk Page. There you’ll see where you can upload your image for the contest. Photos should be no larger than 1MB in size.
You’ll have until October 22 to submit your image for consideration. You are not required to submit anything for the contest if you don’t want to. But, if you do, you’ll have a shot at winning some pretty awesome prizes!
Leaders will then have until October 29 to pick the best photo from their walk. Scott Kelby will choose the Top Ten Finalists and one Grand Prize winner to be announced on November 9. Those photos will also be voted on from November 9 – November 16 for the People’s Choice Award!

Here are a couple Photo Walk tips from Scott Kelby:
    • Don’t Forget to Wear Really Comfortable Shoes (and warm clothes).
    • Charge all your batteries tonight
    • The Most Important Thing Is: That you all stay safe.
Look out for each other on the walk. Drink plenty of water beforehand and during the walk. Don’t get distracted by shooting—you don’t want to bump into, or trip over, anything.

As a final note, I liked this quote from Dave Cross. “Overall remember that first and foremost this is a social gathering where photographers can come together and enjoy some time taking photos. Yes there are prizes available, but perhaps the best reward is just being part of the experience and trying something new.”

    See you tomorrow.

  • Only a few more days.

Welcome to everyone that has joined the Copper Harbor Photo Walk. Looks like we are going to have a great turn out for the Walk.

As planned we will meet at 4 PM at the Hunter’s Point parking area. This is the new parking area, NOT the marina parking lot. The turn from M-26 is just to the west of the Marina. See the map at this link:

The Walk will take place regardless of the weather, rain shine, snow…. See you there.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at jdodge@pasty.net or call 281-4865.

  • October 3 Update

As of today we have 23 folks signed up for the Copper Harbor Photo Walk. Eighteen are signed up on this page and five others have indicated they are coming. A very good turn out – this walk is going to be a lot of fun.

If you are visiting the site for the first time and want to sign up for the walk, click on the green button just above the map.

A couple more tips from the September 25th webcast:
-What lenses should you bring on the Walk? Bring just one lens, one that goes from wide angle to mid-telephoto. Don’t get too hung up on technical details. Even though we are going out to take photos, don’t forget that the walk is also about having fun and making new friends.

-Be safe on the Walk. Watch your step out on the trail, there are lots of roots and stones. Look out for your fellow walkers.

I will sending out directions and maps in just a couple days.

  • September 26, 2012

As of today there are 13 people signed up for the walk. I hope to see a few more by October 13, but this is already promising to be a fun event.

If you did not catch the webcast on the WorldWide PhotoWalk that took place yesterday, you can watch the video at http://worldwidephotowalk.com/webcast/

Quite a lot of good information on the webcast regarding the walk. A few good points that I noted are:
-Bring water and maybe some snacks.
-Dress properly. In the Keweenaw on October 13, that means warm, dry clothes, probably some layers. Also sturdy shoes or boots.
-Sunscreen? It could be a bright sunny day. Or…..
-Should you bring a tripod. We are shooting at the end of the day and a tripod will be good for the low light, but probably not a necessity. The total loop length at Hunter’s Point is 0.8 miles, so that is not too far to carry a tripod. Scott Kelby suggested a small, tabletop style tripod. It really comes down to your preference.

Thats it for now. Check in for more updates that I will be posting in the next two weeks.

  • Location for Social Gathering

After we have captured all those great photos, we will head over to the Mariner North in Copper Harbor. A private room has been set aside for us. Lots of comfortable seating and space to spread out and share our photographs. We will order food and drinks off the menu, each covers their own expense.
