About This Walk

Welcome to my Coney Island Photowalk!

I am a New Jersey based photographer and I’ve been shooting professionally for 30 years. This will be the seventh photowalk I’ll be leading and the second one in Coney Island.

Coney Island is best known for its amusement parks, past and present. Its long history started in the mid-nineteenth century as a resort and entertainment destination. Much has changed over the years, but it still holds a mystique with unique attractions, from vintage to the strange to kitschy, but all with fun in mind. There’s the landmarked Parachute Jump, the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone (96 years old this year!), the boardwalk with its cast of characters, games of chance and of course, Nathan’s Famous.

Many of the attractions remain open on weekends through October and is less crowded this time of year. They’ll be plenty of colorful photo opportunities to be found at this salt-aired, somewhat seedy, seashore town.

More details will follow in the coming weeks. I will provide a suggested walking map and confirm a place to gather for a bite to eat and drink after the walk, for those interested. In the meantime, sign-up and join me for a photowalk at “America’s Playground”.

For inspiration, here are some interesting links and photographers who have documented the area:

Photo Contest SubmissionOctober 9th, 2023

Hi All,

I was great meeting you and thank you for coming out for our photo walk despite the rainy day. We did get lucky that the rain stopped, but I’d like to think it was our creative energy that put a stop to it!

You can now submit your favorite image to the contest. The deadline for submission is Oct 14th and your photo must have been taken during the photo walk. Follow the instructions on this page for submitting and to check out the prizes: https://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes/

There is also a gallery of all the the worldwide submissions so far, here: https://worldwidephotowalk.com/gallery/

I will be following-up with instructions for submitting all of your favorites to share on a Flickr group dedicated to our walk.

I look forward to seeing all your reflections 😉

Update, Friday Oct 6thOctober 6th, 2023

Hi All,

Yes, our photo walk is on! And yes, it is probably going to rain at some point during our walk.

After reviewing several forecasts tonight, the consensus is, there is a 50 – 68% chance of rain during our walk and temperatures will be in the mid-sixties. So, dress accordingly.

One small change…if it is raining at our meeting time of 3pm, let’s meet inside Nathans on Surf Ave, steps from our original meeting area.

If you get delayed, or are unable to make it, send me a text at the number below and let me know.

Update, Thurs Oct 5thOctober 5th, 2023

Hi All,

Rain is still in the forecast for a good portion of the day on Saturday. I’m hoping, though not optimistic, that we might see a change by Saturday. Regardless, the Worldwide Photo Walk is rain or shine and I will be there dressed for the occasion. As the saying goes, “bad weather makes for good photography”!

Remember, there is a photo contest. See the rules and prizes here: https://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes/

I will also set-up a private group on Flickr for everyone to share their photos taken on our walk. If you would like to participate and not a member of Flickr, you can sign-up for free here: https://www.flickr.com/

In the meantime, dance to the sun gods and I will see you on Saturday at 3pm.

Coney Island Photowalk UpdateOctober 1st, 2023

Hi All!
It’s just one week till our Coney Island photowalk! The extended forecast is looking good so far with lots of sunshine, which is a relief after all the rain we’ve had.

I’m looking forward to meeting you and having some fun while we capture a few amazing photos! There will be plenty of subject matter for all. Whether you enjoy photographing people, places, abstracts or just color. Coney Island has it all!

I will be posting a link to a map for my suggested photowalk route in the next few days, which covers many of the highlights.

Street parking can be a challenge in Coney Island, so build in some extra time for finding a spot. There is a parking lot next to the Maimonides Ball Park, 1904 Surf Ave, which is near our meeting and ending place. There are also lots at 2930 W 17th St off of Mermaid Ave, and 3050 W 21st St off of Surf Ave.

Speaking of an ending place, we will gather at the Coney Island Brewery HTTPS://CONEYISLANDBEER.COM/ for a beer, a bite to eat and to share our stories of the day!
We will start the photowalk at 3pm, right next to Nathans, and end at approximately 5:30pm at the Brewery. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me.

  1. I love photographing Coney Island. It’s a two-hour commute but I always try to get out there a few times a year. It’ll be marvelous to go with a pro who knows the territory.

  2. Hi Lawrence,

Coney Island is a fascinating place to photograph, as you know. I grew up in Brooklyn and visited Coney Island often as a kid…I was fortunate to have been to Steeplechase before it closed.

I live in NJ now and understand how the commute can be a hassle…especially the Belt Pkwy!

I will be posting a suggested walk map that hits all the highlights. You’ll have to be registered to see the link to the map. Would love to have you come and join a community photographers, 11 so far, for an interesting day of photos and ending with a bite and a beer at the Coney Island Brewery!

    Best,
    Ken
