Photo Walk Description

UPDATED!

Please Note: The weather is calling for very cool temperatures, possible rain, and even sleet/snow on Saturday morning. Please come dressed appropriately and bring whatever you need to protect your equipment. If you choose to just come to the Church on Saturday and walk the route yourself Sunday that is fine with me, you can still submit your photos to the group.

The walk has “two” starting times based on if you want to join us for an exclusive access opportunity to get into the Old Stone Church. This was recommended to me last year so we pulled it off, but the property manager wants us to be done by 10am. So we will meet (twice) at the front of the Old Stone Church on public square. This is basically the intersection of Rockwell and Ontario. There is some street parting directly to the west on Frankfort Avenue, which is what Rockwell becomes if you travel west. On Saturdays most street parking is free as far as I know – but please make sure you know where you’re parking and if it costs money.

To be clear, regardless of if you show up at 9am or 10am, we will meet at the front of the Old Stone Church:

9:00am – If you want to come INSIDE the Old Stone Church
10:00am – If you just want to join us for the rest of the walk afterwards

This year I’ve tried to “change up” the walk from last year’s path to be a little bit different. You may follow the route or break away, its entirely your choice what you do with this walk. As of right now when we depart the church a little bit after 10:00am we’re going to head north towards the Cleveland Division of Police at Ontario & W. St. Clair. As of Thursday evening they had a 1980′s style cruiser parked on the square, and the buildings in that are offer some opportunities. We’ll cross back over W. St. Clair (south side) and come back south down West 2nd Street or Daniel’s Parkway if it cuts all the way through (this is an alley). We’ll then proceed west down Frankfort until it dead ends into West 9th – as you walk down Frankfort there are a number of architecture related opportunities on both your left and right sides.

We’ll cut down W. St. Clair again and briefly go into the eastern edge of the flats. As you walk down the hill some of the buildings here are very unique. We’ll walk south down Robt Lockwood Dr. along the canal until we get to Superior, at which point you will have a choice.

Option A: Cut back up Superior and come to the Detroit Superior Bridge where we’ll meet back up with everyone.
Option B: Continue under the Detroit Superior Bridge, make a left on Canal. Here you’ll have a unique angle to shoot the Federal Courthouse from below grade and a few opportunities of some of the bridges in the flats.
Option B walkers can cut up a set of stairs that will take you onto federal property and back up to “ground level” where anyone who didn’t want to walk under the Detroit Superior bridge will re-convene.

At the moment, the rest of the route isn’t finalized, and due to the weather I’m not sure how many people won’t want to run back to their cars or go to lunch early. Based on group feedback other options include:

- Walk towards Tower City either via Huron, Prospect or Superior.
- Optionally enter the Ritz for photos in their lobby, water fountain
- Proceed towards the East 4th area because that side street has some great opportunities.
- If you really want to walk down to it, the Cleveland Public Library (inside)
- Optionally enter the Arcade (In 2010, security became antsy and didn’t understand our intent – be prepared to be asked to leave)

Lunch is entirely optional if you wish to come sit down with anyone you brought with you or some random strangers. The Harry Buffalo is located at 2120 East 4th Street (south of Prospect). http://www.harrybuffalo.com/

If you have ideas or suggestions based on the above, let me know. I am going to send my email address out to the whole list of attendees as well as my cellular phone number.

I updated the event description to include the current plan of attack. Please note, if you were planning on showing up at 10am and you can’t show up at 9am do not fret. You can still attend, its just that the option to enter the Old Stone Church is from 9am until 10am due to the availability of the facility staff at the Church. After I publish this update I am going to try to send an email to all of the participants so that the details are known. If you have feed back or suggestions based on the current route please let me know. Dress appropriately for Saturday, the weather is going to present challenges.

Hopefully there will be some cats to take pictures of. However, I’m OK if there aren’t any cats.

Any updates as to the meeting place and schedule for Saturday?

  7. Brian Mowry says:

The last photo walk I was in was in a little town west of cleveland with very little to shoot and quite boring. I am looking forward to shooting downtown cleveland and the old stone church, should be really exciting.

    Hi Fellow Walkers,

Looking forward to Saturday! I take it we’re meeting at the front entrance of Old Stone Church on Saturday? I’ll be there unless I hear otherwise. Not sure of the rest of the route yet though.

  9. Paulette Willis says:

Lousy weather, but a great walk, nice people, great leader. Thanks.
