Photo Walk Description
Hi All,
This is Scott Kelby’s fourth annual WWPW, and my third one at this wetland. We will start early with a sunrise shoot. This means meeting at the parking lot at 6:00 AM, have a brief introduction of the wetland’s layout, the favorite spots, and the plan of the day. We will start walking at 6:30 AM. It will take approximately twenty minutes to a half hour to walk to a good sunrise spot. The sunrise waits for no-one (7:17 AM), so it is important to arrive on time.
Aside from your normal camera gear (which I hope includes a tripod, a normal lens, and another at least 300mm long) wear comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, and sun block. If you are a novice or occasional photographer just coming to enjoy the day, point and shoot cameras are welcome. The object here is to enjoy nature, and meet people who do the same—and capture a few great images along the way. There will be a photo contest, but the first focus is on enjoyment.
I’m Milton Heiberg, a professional photograph, teacher, and author of seven books on photography technique. I owned and operated a major photo studio in NYC until I moved to Florida in 1998. Before all that I was a nature photographer since age 8—and still am.
Best,
Milton

Milton, Looking forward to the walk. This will be my first and I am excited about the location. Look forward to meeting you then.
It should be a great day!
I am looking forward to the sunrise photo shoot and thanks for the quick response to my earlier email. I have been to the wetlands during the day, really enjoyed the area.
It’s my favorite place in Florida. And sunrise is the best time to be there.
WORLWIDE PHOTO WALK –October 1, 2011
It is now September 20, 10:30 pm
Well, it’s almost here, and so far we have tens of thousands of photographers signed-up for local walks around the world for the big day. We are all just amazed and thrilled at the participation and sense of community this has created, and we can’t wait for Saturday, October 1st, to get here.
If you’re park of the walk, here are seven really important tips to help you make the most of your photo walk:
(1) Drink Plenty of Water: Remember, this walk was pushed ahead to October because many photographers complained about the summer heat. But here we are in Florida, so make sure you take plenty of water with you, and stay fully hydrated during the entire walk. Two hours is a long time to be out in the our hot sun so make sure you drink lots of water before and during the walk. (TIP: Want to be a hero? Bring an extra bottle of water or two to share with other walkers).
(2) Use Sunscreen: If your walk is during daylight hours (and most are), make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen, and don’t forget to wear a hat for protection as well.
(3) Leave a Small Footprint: Make sure that you have as little physical impact on the area you’re walking in as possible. Make sure the area looks exactly the same when you leave as when you got there. Be kind to everyone you meet, and create as small a footprint on your walk route as possible. Take only pictures. Leave only footprints. You know the drill!
(4) Make New Friends: This is a social event, and everybody is there to have fun and make new friends, so make sure you talk with other walkers in your group. Ask them ‘what kind of stuff like they to shoot,’ or ‘how they like their camera or a particular accessory,’ or ask ‘if they’ve ever been here before,’ and you’ll have a conversation up and running in no time.
(5) Let Your Leader Lead: Your walk leader has put a lot of time and effort into planning the walk, organizing and publicizing the walk, and making the whole thing happen (after all; without your local Leader there might not be a walk in your city, right?), so don’t try and hijack the walk; let your Leader do the talking, and the leading, and that way you can just relax and focus on getting some great shots.
(6) Get To Your Walk Early: It happens every year; some people miss the walk altogether because they couldn’t find a parking space, or they missed the turn at the “Christmas Tree,” or they ran into something that delayed them from getting to the start of the walk on time. It’s really heartbreaking to get there and find that the walk is already underway and there’s nobody standing there but you, so make sure you plan extra time to get to your walk’s Starting Location, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. You’ll save yourself a lot of stress (and possible heartbreak) by getting there early. Plus, if you get there early, there’s extra time to make friends before the walk even starts—maybe you’ll make a “walking buddy” who’ll share the experience with you.
(7) Play it Safe: The single most important thing is your safety during the Photo Walk. Don’t get distracted by what you’re shooting or seeing, and back of a berm into the water, or into another photographer. Keep your wits about you, and stay alert the entire walk, and look out for other walkers as well. Also, don’t wander of the berm roads, or into areas that may look the least bit unsafe—stay with your group—there’s safety in numbers, and of course always keep a close eye on your camera gear and personal items.
Also, make sure you check out the Official World Wide Photo Walk Blog (here’s the link) for more walking tips.
Milton –
Do you recommend pants over shorts? Not having visited this area I don’t know the terrain/paths and if they are rough or fairly tame in terms of brush/bugs.
Long sleeves and pants always! I never wear shorts of T-shirts outdoors. If the bugs don’t get you, the sun will—not to speak of the scratches you’ll get from bushwhacking the brambles—however we probably won’t be doing much bushwhacking on this trip.
This is my first photo-walk, looking forward to this coming weekend. Thanks for putting this together.
This will be my first photowalk also…
sounds like it should be great and I’m looking forward to it!
We missed your take off time. We landed in the parking lot at 6:15am, but found no one. We found our way in to enjoy some of the beauty of the park. We then found the group on your way back to the starting point. Although we enjoyed the morning in spite of missing the group it felt like a missed opportunity. We had hoped that your take off time would be what was stated it would be on the website of 6:30am.
Are you directing the group to post images to share any place in particular? I would love to see some of the work of the group. If I have an image or two it would be fun to share as well. Please let me know about this. Thanks.
Yes! We did leave the parking lot earlier than 6:30am, but someone should have been there to point you in the right direction. Sorry to hear you were unable to connect. But glad to hear you enjoyed the day. If you got any good images, please enter them in the competition.
