Photo Walk Description

This year’s walk promises to be really fresh and exciting. While we’ve walked the loop before, it was nothing like this year. As luck would have it, our walk is going on at the same time as a very special event taking place on State Street, The “Open Streets” event (OpenStreetsOnStateStreet.org) will run from 10 to 3 and is promising to offer up “an urban playground”.

For a large group of enthusiastic photographers, this appears to be a whole buncha stuff to take pictures of. If not, have no fear. The loop is rich in history and wonderful architectural sites, the Riverwalk is great for people watching and the Sweetwater Tavern and Grille is a nice place to stop for lunch.

If we’ve not shot and/or walked together before, I look forward to meeting you. If we have, I am sincerely flattered that you have signed up and decided to spend this special day with us.

Best,
Charlie

  • Hello Walkers

Hello Everyone, thank you for signing up and deciding to spend your time and this very special worldwide photowalk weekend with us. We’ll be meeting up on Michigan Ave, in the garden on the north side of the Art Institute and stepping off at 9:30AM. Our walk WILL NOT include Millennium Park or the Bean, but we will be right next to it, so if you’d like to photograph it before, or after our walk, that should work out perfectly.

We will be taking on the world famous Chicago Loop. In the Loop there are several nice surprises and I look forward to us enjoying them together. We will visit work from some of the world’s most renown architects and some of Chicago’s most iconic buildings. Toward the end of the walk we will enjoy the riverfront and we will end at the Sweetwater Tavern and Grille.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly, via email at cvguild@mac.com or on my cell at 312 731 1482.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

Anyone know what the points of interest are at this location?

    • Charlie Guild says:

      Hello Will,
This year we will be taking on the Historic Loop area, which is famous for some of Chicago’s most renown architecture. We’ll also have at our feet Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago and some really interesting public art.

      Hope you can join us.
      Charlie

  3. George Vaselakos says:

What time are we supposed to meet? @ Art Institute?

    • Charlie Guild says:

      Hi George,
We’ll be stepping off at 9:30 and I will be posting many more details in the next couple of hours, so please stay tuned.

      Thanks,
      Charlie

  4. Will Howard says:

We’re planning on getting onto the train to Millennium Station – which should be right near the starting point for the walk.

We’re coming from EST time zone. Is the 9:30AM starting time in Central time?

It looks like one of the trains arrives about 9:13AM CST just want to be sure as we’re planning this we’re getting the right timezones and planning accordingly. We don’t want to be late! LOL

  5. Charlie Guild says:

    Hi Will,
Yes it is CST and please keep my number handy in the event your train is late and we’ve stepped off by the time you get in. The good news is we’ll be close even if you are late.

Travel safely and we’ll see you Saturday.

    Best,
    Charlie

  6. Will Howard says:

Awesome – Thank you! See you then!

  7. Randy Weber says:

So ready for this walk tomorrow. Can hardly wait. (One more wake up!!!) All I need now is to wear onesies, cookies & Milk, and big fat guy in a red suit and I would think it’s Christmas.

    See all of you tomorrow.

  8. Charlie Guild says:

I was asked by a walker if they should bring a tripod, below is my response as well as thoughts on other aspects of our walk. See you all tomorrow!

Here is the great tripod debate…….. On one hand, the old tripod adage is, “Better to have and not need then to need and not have.” On the other hand, when photowalking, you are better off being agile, nimble and light, which would mean leave it at home. Because we are out from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, the NEED for a tripod is probably remote, so I would recommend leaving it home or in the car. Having said that, there will undoubtedly be fellow walkers out there with them, so you wouldn’t be alone.

Things to also consider…… the weather forecast is calling for “a chance of an isolated storm early” because of that, I would recommend planning accordingly. That may mean a poncho and/or an umbrella. Personally, I’ll have a couple plastic shopping bags to use as a shroud over my camera if needed.

    Bring water
    Dress accordingly
    Wear comfortable shoes
    Get a good night sleep
    Eat your Wheaties
    Charge your batteries
    Format your memory cards
Be open to have a good time and make some new friends
Keep safety at the forefront of your mind

    And my promise to you:
    No judgements
I will help however I can
Everyone is coming out to enjoy this walk in their own way- to support that, I will help if/when asked, otherwise you’re encouraged to follow your own path and make it the walk you want it to be.

I am very much looking forward to tomorrow, and thanks again for signing up for this particular walk. At walk’s end, I hope it was a great day and we’ve all walked away having renewed and/or found some new friendships.

    Best,
    Charlie

  9. Charlie Guild says:

To all my fellow walkers that came out today, THANK YOU. It was a blast and my only regret is that it ended so quickly. Stay tuned for uploading instructions, until then, you have my most sincere gratitude fro coming out and joining us today, I hope you had a nice walk and I can’t wait to see all your shots!
    All the best,
    Charlie

  10. Mike Valdez says:

Thank you for a great walk, Charlie! Had a great time shooting, catching up with old friends and making a few new ones.

    Mike

  11. Milosh Kosanovich says:

Thanks for the great time. It was really good of you to call ahead and have them close down State Street and stage photo ops just for us.

  12. shondell hamlin says:

Thank You, Charlie.. It was my first walk, and I absolutely loved it. I had a great time shooting and meeting new friends.

  13. Will Howard says:

Thanks Charlie. The street fair certainly gave us more photo ops. I especially loved the musicians and the Dulcinea character near the Chicago Theater, along with lots of great architecture…if it could have only been just a little warmer…

Now the hard part…which photo to choose…

  14. Will Howard says:

Charlie, are you creating a flickr group for us to share our photos with everyone else?

  15. Charlie Guild says:

I will Will. Look for it this evening.

  16. Charlie Guild says:

As requested, here is the link to a Flickr site set up specifically for our walk, enjoy!

Please don’t forget to submit your favorite to the Kelby site (this site) submission deadline is Oct 7 (coming on quickly!)

  17. Will Howard says:

Anticipation…which photo will be chosen?!?! :-)

  18. Charlie Guild says:

    Congratulations Randy!!
