Photo Walk Description

Carlinville offers many historic buildings, including the Courthouse, County Jail, and Loomis House, and a building where Lincoln stayed the night. Nearby includes the Anderson mansion and Sears Homes.

  • Sharing photographs

Everyone will have the opportunity to share photographs with each other on our walk through a special Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/hillsboroillinois/). If you want to participate, you will need to set up a flickr account and then send me your yahoo email address or flickr screen name so that I can invite you to the group. My Flickr screen name is disingy. Please email me at dsingler@consolidated.net if you have questions.
Also, after the walk, you will want to upload your best shot to the Worldwide Photowalk site to enter the contest. The prize is a $45 book on Lighting by Scott Kelby.

  • Camera Equipment

Here are some suggestions for equipment and camera settings:
Any type of camera is acceptable to use for the PhotoWalk. You do not have to have special equipment. However, if you do own an SLR camera and a variety of lenses, here are some suggestions:
Since many of the buildings on our walk will have interesting architectural detail and we don’t want to step into the lawns of historic homes, I suggest a zoom lens, such as a 70-200 mm. A long lens will compress perspective and allow you to photograph architectural detail. You may want to carry a few additional lenses, according to your interests. A standard lens, such as 50 mm will allow for a normal view as your eye sees. A wide angle lens will allow you to take a “Big View” of several buildings together or exaggerate the lines of a building. If it is sunny and you are photographing larger views with the sky included, you may want to bring a circular polarizing lens filter. This filter will make your skies a richer blue and reduce glare from reflective surfaces. My final recommendation is to pack lightly. The walk is foremost for social fun and sharing. Once you have explored, you could always return later on your own with a tripod, etc.

For ideal camera settings, you should use a low ISO, such as 100. You will want a large depth of field for good detail, such as f/16. To prevent blur, your shutter speed will need to be at least 1/60 or faster for a telephoto (long) lens. Shadows, clouds, and polarizing lenses will decrease your light for your camera exposure. You may have to increase your ISO to 200 and use a wider aperture such as f/11 or f/8.
