Photo Walk Description
This walk is in the Boise Foothills on a well-maintained trail. Difficulty is moderate, with an approximately 300 ft elevation change between the trailhead and Crane Creek. Features of this trail are interesting boulders, a dry waterfall (this time of year), interesting topography, and hopefully a killer sunset over the Boise Front. The upper trailhead is approximately 7 miles beyond the Foothills Learning Center. The road can be rough in spots, be aware of bicyclists and motorcyclists and other vehicles coming down the road. We’ll meet at the upper trailhead parking area at 4pm (allow about 40 minutes for the drive up from the bottom) and back at the trail head at 8pm. Sunset is at 7:28pm. We’ll drive down to Harrison Hollow for dinner and drinks afterward for those who would like to continue socializing.
This will be my third year leading a World Wide Photowalk. I’ve been conducting my bi-monthly PhotoCrawl for the past 4 years in the Treasure Valley area (http://www.blueplanetphoto.com/photocrawl.htm and PhotoCrawl Idaho on Flickr). I’m a freelance commercial, editorial and fine art photographer and also teach classes and lead workshops. I’m a board member of the Treasure Valley Artists’ Alliance and on the Steering Committee for Be Outside, Idaho! My website is http://www.blueplanetphoto.com.

Mike, I’ve tried 4 times to fill out the form to sign up for this walk. I’m rejected on each try…I don’t have time to keep fiddling. Is there any way I can sign up for the walk w/o that dratted form?
Thanks.
BTW…typo above…the name is Linda Paul
Linda, Sorry for the late reply, and I may have replied to you directly via email, but
I do see your registration listed (it appears as Linda Pauo, however. If that’s not
correct, let me know).
Hi Mike,
Thanks for all the help and pointers Saturday night.
My name is wrong on the registration. I don’t know that it matters much, but I couldn’t figure out how to go about changing it. Should be Linda Paul, NOT Linda Pauo….
I’ve been asked for more detailed directions to the trailhead. It’s pretty much a straight shot once you get onto 8th Street, but here are some more details that should help:
The upper Hulls Gulch trailhead is up 8th Street about 7 miles beyond the Foothills Learning Center. The first large parking area after the Foothills Learning Center is marked with a large sign for “8th St Parking Area Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail”. Go about 3 miles beyond that to the upper trailhead, another large parking area, which is also marked. The upper part of the road can be rough. The upper trailhead is fairly obvious and the last large pullout on the road. The location I’ve placed on the map is the upper trailhead parking lot. The main road is obvious and there aren’t any side roads to get you off track, other than minor pullouts and some driveways to private residences lower down. So it’s a pretty straight shot up the hill.
I drive a red Isuzu Rodeo with “Blue Planet Photography” in small white letters on the side rear windows. Just look for the group of folks with cameras and tripods!
One more thing (actually, two). The weather’s supposed to be clear and warm, near or at 90 degrees. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and plenty of water. There is a restroom at the trailhead/parking area, but no water on the trail. Cell service is likely periodic to non-existent, depending on your carrier.
As far as keeping track of folks, by participating in this event you are essentially on your own. I will be attentive and responsive to any potential hazards or needs, but I won’t be taking formal attendance or checking people out at the end of the night. Even though we’re going to be close to Boise (seemingly within shouting distance), we will be in an isolated landscape. So, please be careful and aware of where you are to minimize any chance of getting into any kind of trouble and still have a great time. I’ll go through this again before we head out on the trail.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Mike,
Something has come up and I will be unable to attend the walk tomorrow.
I assume this is the only notification required. If more needed let me know.
Thanks,
Mike Thill
