Photo Walk Description

A gentle riverside stroll, with the start of Autumn colour, going downstream past South Mill lock, to Twyford Mill Lock, then back half country / half industrial to the Rivermill.

Expect modern architecture, narrowboats, canal, weirs, interesting footbridges, graffiti under the railway; we pass a Nature Reserve between South Mill and Twyford Locks, and if we’re lucky there will be autumn colour too.

  • New finish at Rhodes Centre

    I just tried to confirm our finish at the Rivermill. Their renovations are overrunning, so the Rhodes Arts Centre cafe is our new end-point, it’s about 100m further on.

    They have Tea, Coffee, Chocolate and cold drinks, including a licensed bar, but only sweets and crisps in the food line. We should however be able to take advantage of their outdoor sitting area, or retreat indoors if needful.

  • Route Update

    I went for a pre-walk walk and decided to reverse the proposed route — I think the light will be better placed for some opportunities. The new route is:

    From the end point, at the footbridge please all gather at 3 o’clock so I can get a participant group photo

    Leave the maltings and cross to the Rhodes Centre

    South to the roundabout on South Road

    Turn left and cross London Road, head towards the river.

    Opposite the Thai restaurant turn right into Twyford Industrial Estate

    Bear left up the slope. We will cross the railway on the footpath (part of the Hertfordshire way).

    About 150 metres after the railway, turn left onto the footpath across the field, which comes out beside the car park at Twyford Lock, hope to get good Autumn colour along here, definitely acorns.

    At Twyford lock turn left onto the towpath, following round past Rushy Mede Nature Reserve (possibly diverting in if you have time) to the rowing club and South Mill Lock.

    The towpath switches sides of the navigation here. At about 4:10 the shadows of the support lie square across the weir footbridge for pattern shots.

    Come back along under the Railway bridge, Graffiti wall here, some nice moden developments on the opposite bank

    At London Road we again cross the river and continue the towpath up he East bank, and back to the Rivermill Restaurant for chat and looking at what we’ve taken today.

    This is my third attempt at leaving a comment.So fingers crossed this works.I haven’t been to Bishops Stortford in over 20 years .I am a bit confused as to where we are to met.
    Whereabouts is the footbridge?
    And where is a good place to park, and is the finish near to the start?

    The footbridge is between the Rhodes Centre, and the Railway station Car park at the end of Millars One Maltings, and there is usually parking there on Saturday

    Phew, that was a steep learning curve for me .I had to quickly learn how to resize an image in elements.All very confusing for an amateur like me.
