Photo Walk Description

At an elevation of 9350 feet, North Lake is one of the earliest locations to enjoy Fall colors in California’s Sierra Nevada. Join us to capture sunrise, then walk through colorful aspen groves in golden hour light. Your leader on this walk, Jeff Sullivan, is a professional landscape photographer, author and workshop instructor living in the Eastern Sierra (www.MyPhotoGuides.com). Join us afterwards at Cardinal Village Resort in nearby Aspendell for a cup of coffee and/or a walk to a nearby mine surrounded by aspen: http://www.cardinalvillageresort.com/

  • Preparation/Gear Suggestions for North Lake

The forecast continues to look great for a small chance of afternoon thunderstorms Saturday, which offers good potential for interesting light for photography, perhaps modest breaking storm clouds and sunrise color early Sunday, maybe even a decorative dusting of snow on the highest peaks. Although the forecast also includes some wind, that’s also generally more of an afternoon phenomenon and I’ve never had a problem here at dawn. Given the 6:45am sunrise time, some of the best sky color could start by 6:20. North Lake Road is 16 miles and 5000 feet up from Bishop, and allow yourself plenty of time for about 4 miles on North Lake road as well (part of it is a decent condition dirt road, on an exciting slope). Aim for 6am to give yourself time to get your gear out and make the short walk to the lake no later than 6:15am. With temperatures in the 30s bring layers including warm hats and gloves.

For camera gear, if you have a Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filter like the Cokin #120 or #121, that will help you balance the light of the mountains with their reflection. A circular polarizer could come in handy to preserve sunrise color if the sky is not solid blue, and a polarizer is really useful to cut glare off of aspen leaves any time you’re not shooting wide with lots of blue sky. A mild warming filter like a skylight 81A or 81B can help correct for the blue bias of high altitude light, but that’s entirely optional as you can (and should) make mild white balance adjustments in post-processing anyway. You’ll get best results with a tripod, and I recommend that you use your camera’s Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB) feature if it has one… best to have a selection of exposures to choose from so you don’t miss a shot, and some day you may want to try exposure blending in Photoshop layers or HDR (High Dynamic Range) software on your results. For lenses, there are a variety of compositions available from ultra-wide to telephoto.

I’ll be scouting the area on Saturday as well, driving a white Ford Explorer. I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends, and to meeting those of your that I haven’t shot with before! I’m 6′ 2″ and my cold weather gear is all black… see you Sunday!

  • Latest Fall Color Conditions, Wed. 9/28

Update Thursday, 9/29: Here’s the latest condition update from Parcher’s Resort:
“It’s officially fall color time in the Bishop Creek Canyon with brilliant color in many areas of the canyon. There are still several areas in the canyon which have yet to peak but there is a lot of color to be found anywhere over the 8500ft elevation mark.”

What is the fee for the No.Lake Walk?
    Bob

    • Jeffrey Sullivan says:

Hi Bob, The North Lake photowalk is free. (I even checked into USFS Forest Service permits and was advised not to worry about it since the event is free.) Don’t forget to register in case you might make it; that’ll make you eligible for the photo contest as well.

  2. I have three people who may be interested. I’ve looked everywhere for your fee. Not to be found. Please get back to me with the information. Not members of Napp.

  4. Jeffrey Sullivan says:

Glad you could make it Deborah!

I hear the Fall colors are finally coming along on the June Lake Loop and Lundy Lake; hope to get out and confirm this week.
