Photo Walk Description

We’ll explore the many faces of West Berkeley, starting at Aquatic Park. There, you’ll have opportunities for shots of various aquatic activities, picnics, boats, waterbirds, and marshes. We’ll then head over to popular Ocean View shopping district on Fourth St. for plenty of people shots and some historic architecture. Then we’ll proceed to the adjacent industrial area for some gritty urban images.

I’m a writer/photographer, a longtime Berkeley resident, and the walk coordinator for the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association (berkeleypaths.org). I organize 24-40 walks per year and recently led a photowalk at the Albany Bulb. I think this will be a great event.

Chaya Bell-Gumaer’s image of a grill-covered window on a green house has been selected as the best photo from our group and has been submitted to the international competition. See all photos submitted below and visit the Flickr pool for other photos not submitted.

  • Submitting Photos for Competition & Uploading to Flickr: NEW INFO

The latest communication from the Photowalk folks is below. Apparently you weren’t able to submit your competition entry until today at 9:00. So if you tried previously, please try again. Also, remember that you our team Flickr group is restricted so you need to submit a request to join. It only takes me a few minutes to add approve it.

    UPDATE:
Now that the event has taken place, photo walkers may begin uploading their photos as of October 3 at 9:00am EDT. To do so, walkers will simply log in at WorldwidePhotoWalk.com, go to their walk page, and follow the instructions listed there to submit their single best image from the walk to the contest. Walkers will have until October 7 at 12:00 noon EDT to upload their best image to the contest.

After image submissions have closed, Photo Walk Leaders will then have until October 10 at 12:00 noon EDT to select a winning image from their Photo Walk.

The Worldwide Photo Walk Flickr Group is also available for people who would like to share more than one image from the event. It’s just for fun, so we encourage people to share their images there, but all images being submitted to the contest will be uploaded on the Worldwide Photo Walk site. http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4/ If participants would like to share their photos, then they will need to create a Flickr account

    Thanks

    Details:
    1. One image per walker per location
    2. 1000px on the long side @ 72 dpi
    3. Max file size is 1MB

  • Submitting photos for competition and posting to Flickr

There are 4 ways to share your photos with the world:

    1. Select your best image from our walk and post it to our group website at http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/berkeley-ca-united-states-west-berkeley/. You have until noon EDT of Oct 7 to post those photos. I will select 1 image from our group to be entered into the international competition. Scott Kelby & crew will make the final selection for which prizes will be awarded. The criteria I will use, in order of importance, is sense of place/composition/technical excellence. I will have until noon EDT of Oct 10 to make that selection. I’ll announce the winner via email.
    2. You can post ALL of your images from the walk to the WWPW Flickr group here http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4/. I suggest using a keyword to indicate that they are from the West Berkeley shoot.
    3. Since there are about 27,500 people taking photos this weekend, I also created a Flickr group just for us so we can sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. That group can be found here http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw_wberk_2011/. You are free to load any photos you took on our walk to this group. Also review the discussion in that group because Ira has suggested some keywords.
    4. If you don’t mind your photos being published for credit but no payment, I suggest you also post your best photos to the Berkeleyside Flickr group. They stream photos from the group to their front page and they often use them for stories. Again you will always be credited. That group can be found here http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=berkeleyside.

Of course, you need to have a Flickr account to post to these groups. That account can be a free account.

  • Continency plan in case of rain

If it is drippy on Saturday morning, use the Contact Walk Leader link to send me email to confirm go or no-go. You can also show up at the starting point at 2 p.m. If the weather warrants a cancellation, I’ll hang out for about 1/2 hour to intercept you.

If the walk is canceled due to weather, I recommend we try again the following day, Sunday, Oct 2 at 2 p.m., same location. If that suggestion does not work for you, please contact me with an alternative or leave a comment on this site. In order to participate in the photo contest and all the post-walk activities on the WWPW site, we should try to get the walk in ASAP. The following weekend may also be possible.

    Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Detailed Map w/meeting place, parking, etc.

The embedded Google map doesn’t work well footpaths and annotations, so I made this one that contains more info and correctly shows the route we’ll take. You can print this the day of the walk and bring it with you, should you get separated from the group.

  • Meeting Place

Thanks to all of you that have registered for this walk thus far. I have an update on post-walk meeting place. We will be gathering at Brennan’s, a short distance from where we’ll be starting our walk. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Berkeley or that part of Berkeley, Brennan’s address is 700 University, but that street address is misleading. It is under the viaduct that spans the freeway and housed in the historic Southern Pacific building, directly off of Fourth St. In fact, the Berkeley Amtrak platform is just outside the western entrance. There’s not a lot of (free) parking directly adjacent to Brennan’s these days, thanks to the new condos that went in last year. So if you’ve parked your car around Aquatic Park, I recommend you leave it there and walk to Brennan’s. There is unmetered parking in Aquatic Park proper and on some of the streets to the south.

Any questions, please feel free to shoot me an email.

    Hello,

I just had a couple of quick questions about this upcoming photo walk:

Do you know what (if any) public transportation is available to get to/from the location?

If I am already scheduled for a walk on Sunday (in San Francisco), am I still allowed to attend this walk?

This walk sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun and as a new resident to Berkeley, I’d love to walk around and learn more about the city.

Thank you for your time and assistance!

    Anthony L.

    • Keith Skinner says:

The AC #51B that runs down University will take you to the Amtrak station under the freeway just past Fourth St. Get off there and walk south on Fourth for 1 block, turn right, and walk 2 (or 3 depending on how you count) blocks west. That’s Aquatic Park. Turn left (heading south again) until you see several big red buildings. That’s the waterside workshops.

Registering for multiple walks is discouraged (see FAQ item below). If you would rather walk in Berkeley, I believe you can cancel your registration from that walk’s site. If you have any problems, contact the walk leader of that walk directly.

Hope to see you Oct 1.

      Q. Since the Photo Walk is taking place over two days, can I participate in more than one Photo Walk event?

A.The idea behind having a second day is not so the same people can fill up both walks—it’s to let people who couldn’t walk Saturday have an opportunity to walk on Sunday. If you sign up for both days, chances are you’ll be denying someone the opportunity to walk. That being said, if it’s a week before the walk, and there are plenty of open slots for a Sunday walk (like 20 or so openings), then it’s perfectly OK to go ahead and join a 2nd walk, because you’re probably not stealing anybody’s spot at that point. Just be a good egg and don’t sign up too early for a 2nd walk, so other people have a chance to participate. You’re on the honor system for this one, and we trust you to do the right thing.
