Photo Walk Description

There are so many things to see on the University of Texas at Austin Campus. Buildings, nature, people, colors, textures, and lots more. This makes it the ideal place for exploring. It is 40 acres but we will not be covering all of it. We will however get a glimpse of the small ecosystem that represents all the things you can see on the campus.

For the walk, we want to capture what we see safely. To be safe please:
1. Look out for each other on the walk.
2. Drink lots of water before and during the walk.
2. Keep an eye on your gear at all times.
3. Please remain aware of your surroundings as you shoot; Don’t get distracted by shooting—you don’t want to bump into, or trip over, anything.
4. Don’t go into scary-looking areas, traipsing down deserted alleys, or any place that looks unsavory.

Tips for the walk:
For the walk, I recommend that you bring:
1. as little gear as possible because your gear gets heavier the longer you walk. Personally, I am bringing my camera with an 18-200 mm lens.
2. water, preferably in a container that you can attach (i.e. it does not have to be held)
3. comfortable shoes
4. extra cards
5. extra batteries
6. lens accessories
7. sunscreen

I recommend doing the following:
1. review the walk route map
2. plan places to stop and get shots
3. look up
4. talk to others during the walk, you might get some great ideas for shots
5. HAVE A BLAST! That is the point of the whole thing.

THE DAY’S SCHEDULE
1. Meet at 8 am. You should be able to park at the 27th Street Garage or along the side streets of our meet location.
2. Get the group shot at 8:00 am to 8:15am.
3. Walk and take photos. Please check out the Austin 2011 Walk Route Map.
4. Crown and Anchor, Austin TX is located at
2911 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78705-3814 and their food is good and very reasonably priced

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Houston Photowalk filled up fast and this has the best interest to me, if you still have room I would like to attend. Please send me information on location and time if it changes.

      Hey Matt,
Sorry I missed the notification of your email. Feel free to join us on the walk when we have spots open up. I actually recommend coming down anyways because we usually have last minute changes.

  2. matt michand says:

So excited to do the photo walk in Austin this year!!!!

  3. Tracy says:

So if we cannot make it on Saturday (Shooting the Monarch Migration) Can I get a copy of the route and walk it Sunday?

    Thank you

    Tracy

    • Simi Shonowo says:

Sorry Tracy you will have to walk on Saturday to be a part of the group unless
there is another walk scheduled for Sunday by someone else.

  4. sabrina says:

Can’t wait for this event! Will we be notified by email if the location changes?

  5. Simi Shonowo says:

    Hey folks,
I have not settled on a location yet so please feel free to suggest a location where we should do the walk. I usually try and pick a location where folks can do all kids of photography so we get more participation.

    • Dave Wilson says:

If we leave aside the locations used for the last couple of years, we could try the West 6th area or possibly UT. Zilker Park/Barton Springs Road may also be interesting bu that may be a bit close to last year’s route.

  6. Hi Simi,
You probably already know…but we are leading a group doing East Austin. There are still vacancies as of Sept 14. We are happy to take your overflow if you would like people to come our way. Thanks, Carlos and Kirk.

  7. Fred says:

We have to reserve a spot for this?

  8. Lisa Bradley says:

Hi, I made 3 attempts to register for the walk, but it’s not going thru on my end. Can you let me know if you got my registration?

    Thanks!

  9. Peter Tsai says:

Hi Simi, I thought I got waitlisted a month ago but I got an update from you and when I came here it said there are 3 more spaces. Just registered again… I think I’m in now?

  10. Dave Wilson says:

    Simi,

Do you have any suggestions on the best place to park for this Saturday’s walk? I don’t know that part of UT very well but I seem to remember a whole lot of “permit only” parking.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    • Dave Wilson says:

Maybe I should have read the text at the top of the page before posting this! Sorry for the false alarm – I see you’ve already provided suggestions.

      • Simi Shonowo says:

Hey Dave, no worries! It is better to ask if you cannot find the information. Looking forward to seeing you out there!

    • Boy Dave, Too bad I didn’t read this earlier… should have had you park at my house.
I misread this and walked down from my house to the Crown & Anchor at 8am… nobody there!
      duh.

I had a nice walk around the campus but hardly saw a soul.

      Next time….

  11. carlos says:

    Hi Simi,

Where are you guys posting your images?
