Photo Walk Description
This is the fourth annual WorldWide PhotoWalk but the first time in Algonquin Park.
Photograph the spectacular fall colors in Algonquin Park with a leader who has been going there for more than forty years. Our walk will take us through yellow, orange and red hardwood forests along the picturesque Oxtongue River, past the Tea Lake Dam to the west end of Tea Lake. You might look for exciting landscapes or intimate details. Wildlife is abundant in this area so we might encounter squirrels, beaver or a wandering moose. Our route has been chosen to maximize your photo opportunities while avoiding any strenuous climbing.
After our hike, we will meet at the Portage Store restaurant at 5:00 for a social get together where food and drinks will be available. The restaurant closes at 7:00 that evening. Meet and chat with your fellow Photo Walkers and share your favorite pictures from the walk. The walk schedule will easily accommodate anyone who wants to do it as a day trip from the greater Toronto area.
There is no fee for the Photo Walk but Ontario Provincial Park fees for use of Algonquin Park do apply to Photo Walkers. The Daily Vehicle Pass is $16.
The online Algonquin Park fall color report shows the current status of the changing fall colors and is updated daily. As of this writing, September 22, I think it will be at it’s peak for our walk. The Friends of Algonquin Park Facebook page Fall 2011 photo album is updated regularly to show photos of the changing colors. Hop on over and check them out.
Again this year, there is a worldwide photo contest open only to walk participants. The best picture from the Algonquin walk will win a free copy of ‘Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It’, Scott Kelby’s new book and be entered in the competition for the Grand Prize. Check out the link above to the Prizes page. Details on how to enter your best shot will be provided after the walk. Only registered walkers may enter and the cutoff for registrations is September 30. So register early. Sadly, PhotoWalk leaders are not eligible to enter. We have such a great location for the fall color display, I think our group has an excellent chance at some of those exciting prizes.

The placement of the pin on the map may confuse some people. I tried to correct it but the software wouldn’t let me. Our meeting place is the parking lot at the Tea Lake Dam near Kilometer 8 on Highway 60. Not over near Cache Lake as shown by the pin placement. The mapping software doesn’t like it when there are no handy street numbers to pinpoint locations.
The fall color status in Algonquin was just upgraded to ‘Peak’ today. Looking good for our walk.
Hi everyone. I’m leaving for Algonquin in a few minutes. I’ll see you all at Tea Lake Dam tomorrow. If anyone needs to contact me – I don’t carry a cell phone or laptop with me – I’ll be staying at campsite 8 or 9 at Lake of Two Rivers Campground.
What a great day for our PhotoWalk in Algonquin. Our timing was perfect. The weather was sunny and bright and the fall colors had just passed their peak. Heavy winds on Friday blew down some of the forest canopy. The next day, Sunday, was chilly and overcast with heavy wind and rain in the evening.
We spent about 2 hours photographing the fall colors at Tea Lake Dam as planned. Then we drove over to Hardwood Lookout Trail for another hour and hiked in to the Smoke Lake Viewpoint.
Hi Les,
I just uploaded my photo!
I chose a scene from Smoke Lake. It displays small boats, flipped over, stored on the shore under a canopy of Fall colours.
One problem, I could only reduce it to 1.5 megabites…..I tried everything I could think of to meet the 1 meg requirement. Aghhhh!
Has Leto posted his photo yet?
Where would I find the photos posted by all?
Thank you for a great photo day.
regards
Jane
Hi Jane,
E-mail me, I could probably help you. My e-mail add jj8rock_machine@yahoo.com
Best Regards, Lito Ochotorena
Yes it was a great day, indeed. I was able to get a bunch of pics even after our met at Hardwood Lookout. Les, I sent you a message on your rogers e-mail and attached my selected pics I’d like to submit for the contest. Just wondering, If you could give me your comments and suggestions on my pics. I still have time to change the photo I submitted until 12 noon today. Thank you. Best Regards, Joselito Ochotorena e-mail jj8rock_machine@yahoo.com
Joselito,
What photo did you submit?
I entered a photo taken at Smoke Lake. It displays the Fall colours, boats and reflections of the boats on the water.
I actually shot significantly better photos on the Sunday, the day after the walk.
I was at Ragged Falls yesterday. It was stunning. I managed to get “stuck” on the cliff for an hour or so! I rescued myself as I was bent and determined not to call in the Park Rangers as my level of embarrassment would have escalated considerably.
regards
Jane
Hi Jane,
I submitted the photo taken at Peck Lake. My son and I went to Peck Lake after our meeting at Hardwood Lookout. It’s backlighted fall coloured leaves with sunburst in it. I keep changing my entry and even now I’m still not sure what the final photo I’d like to submit. See my photos I took at Algonquin in Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/jj8rock/ .
It’s good you were able to get more shots the following day. I didn’t venture on coming back because it’s quite a drive for me.
Great experience you had at Ragged Falls. I call that “dedication”. I did some stuff like that, too. It’s good you were able to rescue yourself safely. Don’t do that again, LOL.
Regards,
Lito
Hi Les,
In the e-mail you sent me, you said the photo had to be in by Friday at noon. So, I dashed a bit and submitted. Is there any chance I can change the submission photo if I see, upon reflection, that I have a better choice?
regards
Jane
Hi Jane,
I see that the deadline has been extended on Monday, Oct 10 at 12NN.
Regards,
Lito
Hi Lito & Jane
I just saw the deadline was extended to Monday. However, only Lito has an entry in so far. Jane, Eleanor & Anna still need to submit something. You can choose any photo from the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday.
Jane that means I don’t see the photo you said you entered.
As far as I know, you can change your entry up until the deadline.
Jane could you please send me a quick email les.howard@rogers.com so I can put your email address on file in case I need to contact you directly. Thanks.
