Photo Walk Description
The walk is less than a quarter mile. We will meet on the front steps of the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 7:45-8 am. We head on sometimes uneven brick sidewalks up the two blocks of commercial King Street to the Farmers’ Market at City Hall. After at least an hour of photographing here, it is a downhill walk back to the Potomac riverfront and the Marina behind the Torpedo Factory Art Center. We will wrap up in my studio at the Factory with drinks and snacks. Restrooms are available in the Torpedo Factory, which opens at 10 am. The route contains a myriad of photographic opportunities. You will see colorful boats, varied architecture, flora, fauna, waterscapes, landscapes, people and all that the marketplace has to offer on the Photo Walk.
Parking: From 5:30 am until 11:00 am, parking is free in the Market Square garage at 108 N. Fairfax St., just off King St. and under City Hall. (http://alexandriava.gov/FarmersMarket). Parking is readily available starting at 7 am in the garage at 220 N. Union St. for $4.00 (cash only) for the day. (http://alexandria.micromaps.com/). The garage right across from the Torpedo Factory Art Center opens at 8 am and costs $10 (credit card only) for the day. Meter parking has a 2-hour maximum ($1.75/hr cash or credit at self-serve kiosk) and some 3-hour street parking is available a few blocks south and north past Founders Park on Union St. Please read all parking signs carefully as Alexandria strictly enforces its parking rules.
Your safety is of utmost importance so please remember to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes because the walking surfaces in Old Town are varied and uneven. The Farmers’ Market is usually quite crowded with vendors and customers, so think about traveling light. Although a tripod will get you the sharpest shots, a monopod or tabletop tripod used as a chest pod will allow you more flexibility when shooting and still produce excellent results. The waterfront area is much more open and tripod friendly. I’m looking forward to sharing beautiful Alexandria with you.
A little about me…I’ve been photographing for over 20 years and enjoy taking architectural abstract photographs. In general, I photograph little pieces of big places and things. I have a studio on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. I led the Alexandria Photo Walk last year and enjoyed the experience so much that I asked to be a leader again this year. Can’t wait to meet you all.

Welcome to all who have joined this walk. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about the walk. I’ll try and answer them.
Nice meeting all of you yesterday. Had a great time.
