Photo Walk Description

We will start out at Waterfront Park (let’s all meet up there at 2:45) and will trek through Old Town Alexandria, taking in cobblestone streets, the waterfront, Market Square, Christ Church and Founder’s Park. Our path will provide great opportunities to photograph flowers and foliage, interesting people, historic buildings, and all the things that make Old Town Alexandria so interesting! I look forward to meeting all of you and having an awesome time together! There are plenty of parking options, “The Dandy” parking lot across from Chadwicks being the most convenient ($5).

  • Last Minute Details

    A couple last-minute things for today’s walk!

    1) For those who are newcomers, here is a link to a Google map I set up that shows our route for today: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=208638888156394789491.0004cbe6528e9c3d8e820&msa=0

    2) I have set up a public Flickr group for people to post their photos to: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2067990@N25/

    3) Please, please, please be early so that we can start immediately at 3:00pm. We are only walking a total of 1 mile, but with over 40 people we will use up every minute of the 2 hours we have allotted.

    4) Remember to dress comfortably, with good shoes. Also remember to bring water, as taking pictures can be hard work :)

    See you soon!

  • One Week To Go!!

First, I want to thank everyone for signing up! We are currently at 28 people in attendance, which is a pretty good sized crowd!

Second, I want to give you all some details to be sure everyone is well prepared for the walk.

    So here we go …

TIMING: Please arrive early! We are set to begin promptly at 3:00 p.m., and in order to do this we need to have everyone already present. I am planning on being on location a little bit after 2:00, but I would recommend showing up between 2:30 and 2:45. Considering this is the Northern VA area, and traffic is a huge variable, planning to show up early means we will all be there at the same time.

CLOTHING: Take the weather into account, and dress comfortably. Remember, we will be walking for a full 2 hours, so make sure that you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing. If you are too hot or to cold it’s going to impact how well you do an (most importantly) how much fun you have.

SAFETY: I will go over safety details again at the start of the walk, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
    1) No children! Although teens are allowed, it is just too risky to bring along children. We will be walking near roadways, near the Potomac River, and in the midst of lots of people. Please do not bring your children with you. I hate to say it, but if you do, you will not be allowed to participate in the photo walk.
    2) Respect other people. If you decide to take “people photos”, please realize that not everyone will want their photo taken. Either use a zoom lens so that you can shoot without people knowing, or ask people before you take their picture (either verbally or with your eyes) and then fire away. We don’t want any confrontations between photographers and bystanders who absolutely don’t want their picture taken.
    3) Stay Alert! Since we will be walking through a variety of areas, and will be in a fairly good sized group, each person needs to be aware of their surroundings so that nobody ends up walking in front of a car or stepping off the edge of a dock into the river :)
    4) Cell phones. It is a good idea to bring along your cell phone. I will be providing my cell number to everyone at the start of the walk so that if anyone gets separated from the group, there is a way to find out where we are and meet up again.

EQUIPMENT: Think in advance what kinds of photos you want to take, and what equipment you will need. If you want to keep it simple, just bring a point and shoot or DSLR or even your iPhone (or other camera-ready phone) and have a blast! Don’t worry at all what anyone else shows up with. This photo walk is primarily about exercising your creative side in an environment that is conducive to learning. However, if you want to bring multiple camera bodies, lenses, tripods, etc, that is fine – just remember you will have to cart this stuff around for two full hours.

AFTER-PARTY: We are planning on meeting up at Chadwicks after the photo walk is over for dinner. This is not mandatory, and you will have to cover the cost of your meal for yourself. In order to help Chadwicks better prepare, I need to know how many people will be doing this. So, please send me an email at info@bstreetstudios.com and let me know if you will be coming. No need to let me know if you won’t :)

I will be sending out more updates over the next week with more details on the exact route we will be taking for the photo walk. In the meantime, please do not hestiate to email me or call me at 703.678.5927 if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    Brian
