Photo Walk Description
St. Joseph, the first capital (San Jose De Oruna) of Trinidad was established on 15th May 1592 by Spanish Conquistador Domingo de Vera, under orders from the Governor Don Antonio de Berrio y Oruna. We meet on the Eastern Main Road, opposite the Jinnah Memorial Mosque in St. Joseph, which was built in 1954, and named after the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-I-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah. Nearby is the site of the old police station. This police station had the distinction of being the place where Governor Arthur Gordon received the very first telegraph on March 4, 1870.. The walk will move north along Abercromby Street, where the Catholic Church can be seen. The church was first built in 1593 and later rebuilt in 1815 and is one of the first 4 buildings erected that made up the first town. Along the way, numerous elements of colonial architecture can be spotted. The walk ends at the First National Park (formerly George Earl Park). This park, named after Councillor Earl (1959 – 1968), is one of the oldest in Trinidad and is the location of a rebellion of the 3rd West Indies Regiment led by former slave, Daaga. At the south western part of the park, there is a silver canon to mark the spot.
