Winning Image Selected: 09photowalk_tugs by Landya
This afternoon I uploaded what I selected as the winning image from our group. If you think it was tough to choose two of your best images, I had the luxury of having to pick just one from all of the great submissions.
The image that I chose this year was titled “09photowalk_tugs” by Landya, who if my memory serves me right, also had the winning image last year as well. No payouts were given, I promise! I will say that there were at least another three or four images I would have submitted if I was given that option.
I want to thank everyone who took part in the Portsmouth evening photo walk and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year. Keep shooting, don’t forget to join the NH Photowalkers flickr group, and lets all route for Lanya to take home the grand prize this year.

Image Uploads
Now that the walk is over you are able to upload TWO images from the photo walk for entry into the worldwide photo walk contest. Please make sure you are sure about the images you want to upload as I don’t know how easy it will be for you to delete them. If you do need an image deleted and cannot do it on your own - please email me and let me know which images and I’ll delete it for you.
Share the Rest on Flickr
If you would like to share other images from the photo walk you can upload them to Flickr (free sign up) and then add them to the “NH Photowalkers” Flickr group. Once you have your Flickr account set up you can head on over to the “NH Photowalkers” group page and click on the “Join” link located directly above the photos. Once you have joined the NH Photowalkers group AND have uploaded your photos, you’ll then be able to add photos to the group by clicking on the “Send to group” icon above each of your larger photos. If your photos are in their own “Set” or “Collection” then you can send the entire set to the NH Photowalkers group all at once (Max 50 per day) by clicking on the ORGANIZE link located near the Flickr LOGO on the top of the page. On the next page you’ll see TABS across the top of the page - click on “Sets and Collections” and then select the appropriate Set or Collection that has your images from the photo walk. Once inside your Set or Collection you can click on the “Batch Edit’ drop down box located directly above your photo and select “Send to Group” from the drop-down list. A pop-up will appear allowing you to select any of the groups you have joined on Flickr. Select “NH Photowalkers” and you’re done!

Restaurant Update: Due the date and time of this photo walk, the Portsmouth Brewery was not able to reserve tables for us. I have instead reserved room at The Muddy River Smokehouse, a great Portsmouth Restaurant that is known for their barbecue ribs among other things. Here is a link to their full menu. (pdf). This year I also ask those who will be coming to dinner to plan on paying with cash. This will allow us to pay the bill as one group since the restaurant cannot do individual bills.
We will be limited to a total of approx. 35 for dinner. Please RSVP as soon as you can, if you haven’t already. We now have 3 spots open for dinner due to cancellations.
The Muddy River Smokehouse will also have entertainment downstairs starting at 8:00 p.m.
Last year I led the morning photo walk in Portsmouth. This year I am leading the afternoon Photowalk. Since I have shot quite a bit in Portsmouth over the past year I plan on shooting less and instead focus on helping you learn a bit more about photography, outdoor portraits, and macro photography.
For those interested in building out their portfolios, I have two models that have volunteered to join us on the photo walk. The models will hope to get some images from those that photograph them in exchange for their time. Kim(?) and Jenn Marie are currently scheduled as our models.
This is the first time the photo walk will include some models. Is this a good idea? I would love to know your thoughts.
Portsmouth, NH is great for those looking to photograph a seaside town, people, arts, festivals, flowers, gardens, and historic homes and architecture. Portsmouth also provides an abundance of great colors, gardens, and harbor views for capturing outdoor portraits with great backdrops. If you would like to bring a friend or relative with you to ‘model’ for the group just let me know. If not, I can try to find a couple of models to come along with us. With such a diverse group of photographers you are sure to get some excellent portrait shots for your personal or portfolio use.
The afternoon photo walk will meet at 5:00 p.m. on the top floor of the High-Hanover Parking Garage. Parking is 75 cents/hr. When you enter the parking garage just keep driving up to the very top level (outdoors). There is usually ample parking up there and it provides good views of the city.
The walking tour will take us along the waterfront where there will be ample photo opportunities (people, shops, tugboats, brick buildings, quaint streets, etc.). We’ll then continue down bow street as we head passed the 170′ high Memorial Bridge toward Prescott Park and Strawberry Banke.
Prescott Park offers beautiful fountains, tree lined walkways, a flower wall, flower garden with over 500 varieties of flowers and a separate rose garden.
The walking tour will then take us up down a few quaint streets of Portsmouth as we head toward Market Square (downtown). This route we will provide the opportunity to photograph historic homes as well as the North Church, the streets around Market Square, as well as the many shops and cafe’s in Market Square. The tour will then continue down Market Street and end at the Portsmouth Brewery Muddy River Smokehouse where we can gather for dinner and to view, compare and share the photographs we took.
Last year was a great event and I look forward to seeing many new and familiar faces.
Suggestions
• Charge your batteries the night before (or use fresh AA’s if your camera takes them)
• Start with an empty memory card by uploading any images from your camera to your PC, then place memory card back into your camera and reformat the card. Bring enough memory to shoot 100+ images - or - just take a few awesome ones!
• See next bullet point (If you are registered for the Portsmouth Photo Walk you will also want to register with our Flickr group in order to share your photo’s and have a chance of winning prizes. Additional information about this year’s Flickr group for our Photowalk will be posted as soon as I receive more information.)
• Photos from this years photo walk will be uploaded right here on the official Worldwide Photo Walk website. I will most likely have information on when we’ll be able to upload the images as we get closer to July 18th.
Optional items that you could make use of during the photowalk include:
• Circular polarizer to reduce reflections off water and windows
• Built-in or add-on macro lens or step-rings for macro shots of flowers or other fine details
• Flash (on or off-Camera) to act as a fill light
• Small plastic Waste bin size trash bag as rain cover for DSLR
• Large Ziplock bags can make great emergency rain cover for point & shoot
• Lightweight tripod if you plan to shoot macro photography
• Umbrella (at least have one in the car) in case the weather doesn’t cooperate
• Light jacket or sweater
