A Message From The Walk Leader
I did this walk for the 2008 World Wide Photowalk and it was a lot of fun. Here are photos from our group that has continued to meet since then. We had almost 30 people show up and walk the streets of downtown Portsmouth. There is also an afternoon walk in Portsmouth hosted by Ron Risman who also led a walk last year if this time doesn’t work for you. While Portsmouth is by no means a big city it is nice to have two different times to accommodate the schedules of more people.
To quote Ron, “Portsmouth, NH is great for those looking to photograph a seaside town, people, arts, festivals, flowers, gardens, and historic homes and architecture. Portsmouth also provides an abundance of great colors, gardens, and harbor views for capturing outdoor portraits with great backdrops.” It really is a photogenic place with a variety of subjects.
We’ll meet on the top floor of the High-Hanover Parking Garage. Parking is 75 cents/hr. When you enter the parking garage just keep driving up to the very top level (outdoors). There will be ample parking up there and it provides good views of the city and is centrally located.
The walking tour will take us along the waterfront where there will be ample photo opportunities (people, shops, tugboats, brick buildings, quaint streets, etc.). We’ll then continue down bow street as we head passed the 170′ high Memorial Bridge toward Prescott Park and Strawberry Banke.
Prescott Park offers beautiful fountains, tree lined walkways, a flower wall, flower garden with over 500 varieties of flowers and a separate rose garden.
The walking tour will then take us up down a few quaint streets of Portsmouth as we head toward Market Square (downtown). This route we will provide the opportunity to photograph historic homes as well as the North Church, the streets around Market Square, as well as the many shops and cafe’s in Market Square. The tour will then continue down Market Street and end at the Portsmouth Brewery where we can gather for lunch and to view, compare and share the photographs we took.
I’ll update this page with new information as the event approaches. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Suggestions
- - Charge your batteries the night before (or use fresh AA’s if your camera takes them).
- - Start with an empty memory card by uploading any images from your camera to your PC, then place memory card back into your camera and reformat the card. Bring enough memory to shoot 100+ images - or - just take a few awesome ones!
- - Check the time stamp on your camera to make sure it is correct.
Optional items that you could make use of during the photowalk include:
- - Circular polarizer to reduce reflections off water and windows
- - Built-in or add-on macro lens or step-rings for macro shots of flowers or other fine details
- - Flash (on or off-Camera) to act as a fill light
- - Lightweight tripod if you plan to shoot macro photography
- - Umbrella (at least have one in the car) in case the weather doesn’t cooperate
- - Light jacket or sweater

WOW. I am stunned! Thank you, Rob - this is really surprising. So many great photos in our group, I just never thought mine was in the “possible winner” group! I have the first 2 books in Scott Kelby’s trilogy so the third will be most welcome!
Thanks again!
Barb
Congratulations Barbara, good luck in the worldwide contest.
Hey Walkers!
I’m picking the winner of our walk today. I’ll send out an email after I get it uploaded and I’ll post a link to it here. So many great shots to choose from!

I moved away from Portsmouth about ten yers ago and it was nice to see the the fantastic images from around town. I participated in the photowalk in Rochester, Michigan and we had a wonderful time there, too. I look forward to participating again ……maybe even in Portsmouth.
Thanks to everyone for braving the fog! Looking forward to all the photos. - Rob
Wow, great photos
