A Message From The Walk Leader

UPDATE: I have added some times to the photowalk. Not many of you contacted me about the time but those that did were all in favour of a walk in the evening so that’s what I’ve gone with.
Sunset is at around 21:10 on 18th so my suggestion is to do an early evening walk, from 17:30 until 19:30 then have a break for some social drinks/food for an hour or so and then head back out again for sunset and the twilight which ends at around 21:50. As long as we get good weather we should get a few hours of nice light before the break and then a good sunset/twilight afterwards. (Keep your fingers crossed…!) Clearly if you don’t want to head back out afterwards, that’s fine too.

Since London is a big city, there is room for more than one photowalk location! So, I’ll be hosting this one on the Southbank of the river Thames. The intention is to start at the London Eye and work our way along the Southbank towards the Tate Modern by the Millenium bridge. There is architecture in abundance, including the National Theatre, views of the Houses of Parliament, The London Eye, The Festival Hall, The Millenium Bridge, The Oxo tower etc. There is also an un-offical skate park always filled with skateboarders and BMX riders.

If there is interest from attendees, we could do a strobist style outdoor portrait shoot and I’m sure a model or two could be located on a TFP basis to suit. If anyone is interested in this or knows any models that might be suitable, please do let me know and we’ll get it arranged.

For those travelling in to London specifically, there are plenty of opportunities for other areas of London is anyone wishes to either come in early or stay later depending on the start and end time we choose.

I’d advise against driving in to London as parking is difficult around there. Best to catch a train or tube (on Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo or Waterloo and City lines) to Waterloo and then walk the 5minutes to the London eye.

I am as yet undecided on start and end time, so if anyone has any suggestions/preferences, please pipe up! I’d suggest later in the day rather than earlier, to get the evening lights of London and hopefully a nice sunset, but I’m happy to go with the general consensus - so get your suggestions in! If enough people are interested I’d be quite tempted to run two walks in the day at the same location - one early morning, one early evening to get the beginning and end of the day when the light is at its best.
The other option would be to do the walk, stop for a break, then for anyone that fancies it, continue a bit longer and get some city at night scenes.

For anyone who wants to know a bit about me, I’m a Canon nut! (everyone is welcome no matter what camera you use…but Nikon users expect a ribbing;-)) I’m the former technical editor of EOS Magazine and the current technical editor of Canon Professional Network. I also run training courses both group and 1-2-1 and although it’s a photowalk rather than any organised training, I’ll be more than happy to answer Canon techie (and general photography) questions on the walk.

I look forward to seeing you all on 18th!

David, just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed yesterday’s event and how nice it was to meet a bunch of well balanced (?) like minded people with a wide range of experience from near beginner to pro. The route was great and I can’t wait to see everyones shots.

    Thanks again
