A Message From The Walk Leader

ONE MORE DAY

This is just a quick note to let you know that we will be meeting at 9 a.m. at Remedy Coffee. No need to come earlier. We’ll have a meet-and-greet at the coffee house for a few minutes, grab a group photo outside, and start trekking through downtown around 9:15-9:20 a.m.
When you arrive at Remedy, I will have a map of downtown Knoxville (along with a little goodie bag!) for each of you. The route will be highlighted — but you’re free to explore and wander off the path at any time.
For lunch, we’ll meet at Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria. Because they have good food and are located in the Old City (near Remedy Coffee and where most of us will be parked), this is a great place to close the event, talk about our photos, and socialize. (So around 11:15-11:20 a.m., we can plan on wrapping up at Market Square and start heading back to the Old City.)
I know several of you have asked about parking. Here is a link to a PDF of the downtown Knoxville parking map: http://www.cityofknoxville.org/map/mapdowntown.pdf. If you look at the top of the map in the “Old City” area, there is an orange “P” on West Jackson Avenue near the Norfolk Southern Railroad. If you park here, you will need to walk about two minutes down Jackson to Remedy Coffee. There is street parking available in front of and next to Remedy and Barley’s, but this lot is free (which is a great thing!).
And the other big question… What to bring? Here are the essentials:
  • Camera! (Any type of camera will do: digital, film, SLR, point-and-shoot, TLR, pinhole, etc.)
  • Camera bags are handy
  • Batteries (You never know when you’ll need extra batteries…)
  • Memory cards or film (I’m sure you’ll be taking a lot of photos)
  • Good, comfortable walking shoes
  • Business cards or calling cards — This is a great time to network and make new friends. Bring some business cards if you’ve got them to share!
Also, I will be holding a little contest during the photo walk. And yes, there will be a prize. Details will be announced the morning of the walk. (Hint: It’s kinda like the “I Spy” game…)
I checked the weather for Saturday, and it seems like it’s going to be partly cloudy with a high of 79 degrees (according to weather.com). Seems like great weather for a photo walk.

FROM SOCIAL EVENT TO “SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS” PHOTO WALK

Our very own local photographer, Bobby Strange, designed these awesome t-shirts for the Worldwide Photo Walk: http://www.cafepress.com/wwpw2009. We are selling the shirts to support the Kids with Cameras organization, a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to marginalized children in communities around the world.

Get your shirt today, and make a difference in the lives of children worldwide! (Click here to read more. Or head on over to Bobby’s Cafepress store!)

Attention Photogs! Join our KNOX PHOTO group — an online community for area photographers and creatives. Also, you can follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/knoxphoto. We’ll be tweeting updates before the walk — and we’ll be tweeting the day of the Worldwide Photo Walk!

UPDATE: Start location changed to Remedy Coffee, located at 125 W. Jackson Avenue in the Old City. Remedy Coffee is excited to participate in the Worldwide Photo Walk and has invited our group to start the day with breakfast pastries and great-tasting direct trade coffee!

Hi, everyone! I’m Lia, your 2009 Photo Walk Leader for Downtown Knoxville!

The walk is going to start at Remedy Coffee early in the morning and finish in the middle of busy Market Square during the noon rush to the Farmer’s Market, boutique stores, and delicious lunch spots. Downtown Knoxville is full of stories and surprises — so make sure to bring enough film and/or memory cards for the morning.

The photo walk details are still being finalized (as the announcement for the Worldwide Photo Walk just came from Scott Kelby on Monday, May 18, 2009), but please feel free to share your ideas for the walk (and for lunch!). I’ll be posting more information and updates to this page in the weeks leading up to the event, so please check back often.

Space is limited to the first 50 people who sign up — register today! In the meantime, please email me if you have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing all of you and your camera gear on July 18!

- Lia
