A Message From The Walk Leader
Ok, folks, grab your camera, some comfortable shoes and let’s go to Chinatown, in downtown Los Angeles! Not only to get a bit of a local culture, but there are very cool restaurants, galleries, shops and a lot of color.
We’ll be starting early before many of the shops open so you can quietly discover the storefronts and plazas before it all opens up , Then you’ll be able to capture the opening of the doors and the people filling the streets to get their Saturday marketing on.
Parking is recommended in the Bamboo Plaza lot on Bernard St, just off of the Hill St. exit off of the 110. you will go down Hill to College, Take a left, and the next left, and then a final left on Bernard , where you will make , yes, another left into the parking structure. Easy enough, but your call. Plenty of other lots and meters around. Plus if you go to Empress Pavilion after, they validate.
So we will meet at Central Plaza which is a good open air location, where we will meet at and come back to at the end. There are also some 16 great historical markers in the streets in Chinatown which give you a history as you walk, and a map if you get lost.
Here is a history of where we will be. And some landmarks. Here is a cool color map of what you’ll be seeing. If you are not a regular visitor you will be amazed at the treasure that is Chinatown.
After we shoot, the goal is to stop at a local dim sum restaurant , where can share photos via chimping (checking em out on the cameras LCD) and enjoy an excellent meal that will keep you coming back downtown.
Details will follow as we get them for the home office.
Just remember the famous line from the Jack Nicholson movie: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown”
A little video for you on Chinatown:
Update: Wow! we are to capacity! fantastic! On Sunday , I’ll be walking the walk, and sending out more info to those of you joining us.
Anyone interest in Dim Sum brunch afterwards? Everyone is responsible for their own meal, but I’ll get a place set up for us.
OR we can hang in the Central Plaza as there are a few places to get some snackage to go.
UPDATE: Did a walk through today and feel that even though we gather together as one unit, we should probably split up a bit, to get the most of the walk. And not overwhelm the natural order.
There is also a downtown bonus: at MOCA on Grand, there is a very special exhibit of Robert Franks’ The Americans original 83 vintage prints from the book of the same name.
Just saying.
It’s a rich canvas for making great images, though. The colors and the architecture alone would do you, but there is so much more.
