A Message From The Walk Leader

Hello, I’m Stephen Power, a full-time professional photographer and photography teacher, and winner of the NAPP Guru Award for photography, at the Photoshop World event that took place in Boston, 2007.

The Cashel PhotoWalk starts at the historic Cashel Palace Hotel, in whose grounds Arthur Guinness is reputed to have grown the original hops to make his world famous beer. There are still some hop plants there, to be photographed.

The hotel’s garden links directly to the Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s - if not the world’s - greatest tourist attractions, and I expect that we will spend a considerable amount of time exploring and photographing this ancient monument. Along the way there are views of the town, views out towards the Galtee mountains and the historic medieval walls in the gardens themselves.

From the Rock, we will head back to Town to see Dominic’s Abbey, visit the thatched Cashel Folk Museum and Mikey Ryan’s Victorian pub for a coffee-stop.  We can then look at the colourful streetscape in the centre of the town and  head to the Georgian quarter to take shots at  St. John’s Cathedral and the Bolton Library. Finally, a  walk down Agar’s lane to the  new Catholic Cathedral with its  brightly coloured mosaic attic and the modern architecture of the Cashel Library, next door.

The walk will finish with lunch in the 14th Century Kearney’s Castle Hotel, where we hope to have an opportunity to project some of the shots taken, courtesy of my good friend Sean Laffey, and his laptop / projector combo - and award the prize for the best photo taken on the walk.

Incidentally, our PhotoWalk will coincide with “Cashel Visualised”, a festival where works of art will be on display throughout the town. this should lead to even more photo-opportunities than usual.

I hope to see you there.

Stephen
