A Message From The Walk Leader
5 August 2009
Hi everyone,
I’ve received feedback from 2 walkers which felt that it was unfair that Leon’s shot won on the day. I should have been more clear about why Leon led the walk on the day and also how the winning image was picked.
I signed up to lead the walk 3 months ago, but had to pull out at the last minute. Leon kindly agreed to step in for me and took control in the week before the event. I did still feel responsible to do as much as possible, since the event was my baby from the start and agreed to do the judging, without any input from Leon or anybody else. For the record, I do know Leon quite well, but I do know other people in the group as well to a greater or lesser extent. Last year Leon walked as well, submitted a stunning image and did not win. Same goes for my wife :-) I picked Joy-Anne’s image. I did not know her at the time at all. I’m hoping this speaks to my ability to make fair decision.
That said, I ran the situation past the organizers and Scott Kelby himself replied and said he did not have a problem with Leon’s image winning, as long as the group is happy. If there is unhappiness in the group then I should consider changing the result, but he felt that both first and second place images were worthy winners.
So since there is unhappiness in the group I have decided to change the result. I’m sad that Leon’s image can’t go through, but in the interest of fairness and transparency I have decided that the runner up should rather go through. So congrats to Peter for your shot of the balloons! The organizers need to update the winning page as I no longer have rights to do so, but this is the image I’m referring to:

Until next year folks.

Hi guys, it’s Ruan here. I’ve looked through all the images and am really sad that I missed out on the walk! Looks like you all had a ball.
Picking a winner was not easy for me as there were a few strong contenders. I really liked Peter’s shot of the balloons and Siobhan’s ‘Faces on the ground’ was another striking image.
In the end I decided to go with Leon’s ‘Statue’ shot. Technically this is a great image, has a bit of Cape Town in it and I like the tongue in the cheek title. I kept coming back to it and even after looking at it for a while now, it remains top of my list.
So congrats Leon and good luck for the next round. Hopefully that D700 will make it’s way to South Africa.
Until next year folks!
Ruan

Hey there shooters! I dont know about you, but i think Saturday could not have been better for photowalking! I trust you all had a good time walking shooting and chatting about all things photographic and caffienated
To clarify, and just incase you have not yet received the email from NAPP, here is the “rules” for uploading your frames of fortune (you will need your username and password for both procedures) :
Procedure 1: Lightroom (2.0+) Plugin
- Download the Exclusive Worldwide Photo Walk® Lightroom plugin.
- Install the Worldwide Photo Walk Lightroom plug-in. Please use this guide for installation instructions.
- Open Lightroom 2 and select the image you want to upload. Go to the “File” menu and choose “Export”.
- Choose Worldwide Photo Walk Upload plugin export option.
- Enter your Photo Walk credentials. Enter the URL of your Photo Walk location, your username and your password. Click “Test Credentials” to verify.
- Adjust image settings in export dialog as you wish, though there aren’t many to set.
- Click “Export” and wait for your image to transfer. If you’d like to verify your transfer, check the “Media” button on the left.
Procedure 2: Direct upload to the site
- Login to your Dashboard using the username and password you received when you registered. (Lost Password?)
- Locate the “Media” button on the left-hand side of the Dashboard menu and click on the arrow to expose the sub-menu. Click on “Add New”.
- Click on the “Select Files” button and choose the file you want to upload as your Photo Walk submission.
(If you are having problems, please read the note and choose the Browser uploader) - Select your image and upload. Be patient! You will have to wait a bit for the image to upload and process.
- Enter your image information. Enter your username into the “Title” field for organizational purposes, then enter the “Caption” and “Description” you want. Click “Save All Changes”.
- That’s It! You will be sent to the media page where you can see your brand new upload.

Thanks for the guy who let me know they cant make it, so i’m taking them off the list for a couple #99′ers who still want to join our walk.
looks like the weather forecast is much more promising than on Sunday… and defiantely better than last year’s walk that ended in tears rain.
…remember to charge the batteries!

Hiya, Leon here.
Yip, it is like it seems; i’ve had trouble getting the admin page to save the changes i have made to reflect in the live page. (my?) apologies.
so here it is:
Start time: 08:00 (please aim to be there a little earlier as we can get to know each other)
Start location: Planetarium Entrance on the bend at the top of Queen Victoria Street
End time: 10:00
End location: Caramellos, Kloof Street
Route: we will be leaving from the Planetarium at precisely 08:00-ish. the route is simple, but is jam-packed with photogenic gems. We will continue down Queen Victoria to Waal Street, nip into St. Georges Mall al the way down to Strand Street, take a left and head up Long Street and carry on all the way up (Long Street becomes Kloof Street) where we can enjoy some coffee together and have a C&C session (C&C: Chat & Chimp which means showing others what youve got sommer on the back of your camera). SURE there are going to be numerous bloopers, i make those a lot, so dont be shy… everyone has something unique to offer.
NB: I want to ask you to stick loosely to the group, if you fall behind by getting interested in something, just make for the big group with cameras on the route as described above. if the group is moving to slowly, feel free to move ahead and retrace your steps back to the group as you are sure to see things the second time around you didnt the first time.
Also, it is always a good idea to explore the side streets that lead off the route as there are MANY interesting things to see there as well, but again, please dont take alternative routes Photogaphs shot in Loop, Bree or Adderley Street amongst others, will not be considered part of the photowalk.
To siplify, see my basic, nay primitive illustration: “—H—-H—-H—-H—” the route carries on in the middle the dotted line could be Long Street) although nipping into sidestreets and getting back on track is kief like beef.
I will be parking at Caramellos as is it only a block and a half away from where we start the walk. We will be leaving from Caramellos at 07:30 so we are at the planetarium in time to meet everyone there, get to know a couple of guys and to get some last minute announcements before we fire the start gun
For the first time photowalkers, the point is go get to know other photographers in our city, pros and amateurs alike. if youre an amateur, dont hesitate to ask questions. if youre a pro, bare in mind you knew nothing at some stage, so please dont feel shy to get chatting as well. the aim is to play camera camera (have fun), not to prepare for a position at National Geographic.
Any questions, please direct them to me and I will try and get an answer to you as soon as I can.
Cheers
Leon

Last year we spent so much time in Bo-Kaap that we did not properly explore the city centre. We’re currently deciding on the final route and will post the start and end location on Friday 10 July, but it will be somewhere in the CBD. The start and end times will not change.
In the mean time, check out the useful resources posted on the main PhotoWalk site (http://worldwidephotowalk.com). Scott and friends share some great tips to help us have a fun day out.
Sadly, I will not be able to do the walk myself anymore, but my buddy Leon Oosthuizen has kindly agreed to take the lead for the day. Leon will post the route and be in touch later this week.
Have fun!
Ruan

Hi Leon - I am really apologetic for not letting you know that I could not be there! We had a pet death and were not thinking straight for the last two weeks! (I know it sounds corny - but hell it was hell). I also have to admit without reminders I do not do well with organising my life! I am so upset with myself cos I really wanted to meet like minded people! I hope it went well even with the Mandela celebrations in the city! I reckon with that in mind that some historical shots could have been taken that will achieve rewards and recognition! I will be there next year!
Thanks Leon for leading the walk. It was great to meet you and the other guys. Had loads of fun!
